Summerfest Sessions: Craig Campbell
Welcome to the first in a series of episodes from our trip to Milwaukee, Wisconsin’s annual Summerfest music festival. We will be releasing weekly episodes that include the tracks recorded by some of the festival’s performers, as well as interviews where the artists talk about their music, their studio experiences, their impressions of the mobile studio, as well as the gear we use on board the mobile studio. With over twenty tracks recorded on the mobile studio throughout that week, you can expect a lot of content coming out in the remaining weeks of the summer and into the fall.
The first video in our series features country artist Craig Campbell and his exceptionally talented band. When we heard these guys singing three part harmonies in the lounge in preparation for the recording, we knew we had a real treat in the studio. Craig Campbell’s style could be considered traditional popular country, but we found out very quickly that his lyrical and composition style was unique, creative, and happy go lucky. He played a cleverly whimsical and catchy tune called “I’m Just Sayin’” as well as his more sentimental ballad titled “When She Grows Up.”
For the recording we used a combination of Neumann and Sennheiser microphones. For the vocals we used the Sennheiser e935, and for the acoustic guitars we used the e914 microphone. Craig Campbell also brought along a dobro player who we tracked using the Neumann TLM 103. For this recording we also threw the Sennheiser e901 “Semi” – cardioid condenser microphone for kick drums, into a microphone case, for a bit of bass and snare drum sound. It’s not perfect, but we thought it sounded pretty cool. Give it a listen and tell us what you think.
All of the microphones were running into the PreSonus StudioLive 24.4.2 FireWire interface and live sound mixer. The StudioLive was then routed to Pro Tools 10 via a single FireWire cable. Within Pro Tools 10 we used their sets of plug-ins but generally stuck to their reverb plug in to bring out the sounds of the acoustic guitars and vocals.
