The Sormina – A New Wireless Instrument From Finland
Does form follow function? Or is it the other way around? Lately we’ve been seeing handheld, one-off instrument creations that are built to trigger notes via MIDI mapping. While some creators like to keep their instrument designs more modern, with flashing lights and rough edges – some, like Juhani Raisanen, have put more of a humanistic touch to their creations.
The Sormina does not resemble any traditional instrument available today, other than its wooden wheels that activate triggers wirelessly. The placement of these “wheels” resemble that of a clarinet, but the entire piece looks more like a back massaging device, if you ask me.
