The Buchla Electric Music Box – Recreating A Classic

There are some ridiculously high priced instruments out there – I’m talking about something the price of a small used car.  I shouldn’t complain since the idea of an expensive music instrument has always been something that we’ve taken to be normal.  Maybe it is because we are so used to finding watered down versions of an instrument for cheap that we cringe when we see the real deal costing thousands of dollars.  This is the way it has to be if you want the real deal, I guess.  The best example I can use of scaled down products is with electric guitars.  What makes an electric guitar so expensive?  Isn’t it just a matter of finding the right strings, amp, and pickups to get the sound that you want?

Why does a cheap electric guitar cost only a hundred dollars, and why does a Les Paul cost up to five thousand dollars?  Is it the body of the guitar that makes the difference?  Perhaps it is because it was created with much more attention to detail, rather than a production line.  The Electric Music Box is up there with those five thousand dollar guitars – who can afford one?  Apparently there are people that will buy one.
