How Should I Mix At An 80s-Style Party?
The modern DJ would be smart to realize that it just as important to generalize as it is to specialize. Case in point: A club DJ who only spins hip-hop at the club will have a hard time trying to make it into a club that plays electronic music. However, that DJ needs to be careful whenever they try to blend genres, depending on whatever club they may currently be at. With that said, any DJ given the chance to play music for a themed party or a retro party should jump at the offer. Unless they have absolutely no business spinning that type of music, it should be easier than trying to use a one size fits all strategy.
For example, if you’re asked to spin an 80’s gig – there will be very few people that will hassle you for playing overplayed music. It’s all overplayed music, and there is currently no new 80’s music being produced (except for groups like Chromeo). If you can find a set of top 100 hits of the 80’s you should be golden for the night, just be sure to add some personality to your mixes so you don’t seem like a robot.
