An Introduction to the Self-Released Album

I think it’s sort of funny when I hear the term “freelance” musician or “freelance” producer, since most of the musicians and producers are essentially freelance to begin with.  To be at the point where you are hired out specifically or you work for a production company really means that you have made something for yourself in the world of music production.  The best thing we can do to get an idea of what it is like in the jungle out there is to take some advice from those who have been “freelance” their whole lives.  This means that they have lived with uncertainty and have even profited from it.

What can be said is that these days, you don’t need to work with a production team to make music, and you don’t need to be signed with a record label in order to sell your music.  We have ways of getting around the normal convention of music making – and we can even sell music without having to pay back the powers that be (except for the hosting service).  It should also be stated that the trends in music are always changing, so it pays to really follow up on how people are receiving their music.
