Needs to Consider Before Looking for a Music Publishing Deal
Having your band or act go from a garage to the show floor is a small step with some huge risks. You are stepping out of your comfort zone, and all that you are used to might change with a quickness. As soon as you begin making money for your music, there are going to be those with their hands out, and those who promise to make you even more money, as long as they get in on the cut. As the saying goes, it takes money to make money – and this is especially true if you want to protect yourself and your music.
Getting signed means a lot to a band. It makes them official and it inflates their sense of self-worth – but there are other sides to it. There is the legal side of things that includes publishing as well as promoting. There are people that need to be paid off and people that need to be kept happy. All in all, it can get pretty dirty if you are on the wrong side of the fence. It may be wise to even seek legal advice before even signing a piece of paper or shaking hands in agreement.
