Social Media Lessons From The Beastie Boys

Social media will probably remain a great avenue for musicians who are trying to make a name for themselves.  It is relatively easy to access, and easy to spread your message to potential fans.  The problem with social media now, is the way people tend to use it.  The word social implies that both and all parties involved are able to hear and respond to each other.  If you do all of the talking and never take the time to actually respond to your audience, what is the point?  Also, an individual who does not consider themselves to be a “brand”, will have problems identifying a place for themselves in this scheme of things.

We like to associate persons and brand to an image that they represent.  If you are a wealthy sports player who has more than enough money on their hands, it just looks better when you give some of that money away to a charitable cause.  By keeping all of your profits you may appear to be greedy.  This was an extreme example, but the philosophy applies to everyone as well.  If you are seen as a noble brand, it is easier to win the respect of your potential fans.
