The Pioneer SG-1
While most of us are very happy to have updated gear with newfound technology – there is always a part of us that remembers how it used to be in the good old days. Just a decade ago we were wasting time with things that come second nature to us now. Consider how we made mixes when we only had cassette tape. If you were smart, you could take two tape decks and overdub on onto the other. If you were even cleverer, you would physically cut the tapes and then glue them together. Of course this looks really silly today when you compare it to the simple drag and drop editing that can be done in any simple music editing program.
Although music production will likely never come back around in its original form, there are still a few things that can be done here or there to give us the impression that we are producing music without computers. If you want to take a guess, try to imagine how the old Korg samplers used to look back in the day – complete with wooden lined edges and weight. Pioneer is now attempting to give their new line of Serato controllers the old look.
