SXSW 2011 Wrap Up | Unique Squared Mobile Studio

With all of our gear packed up, screws and bolts tightened, and a full tank of gas (and some refilling along the way), the Unique Squared Mobile Studio team headed out to SXSW 2011 ready to have a blast. From official showcases to barbecues and non-stop recording sessions, the time we spent in Austin, TX for this years’ South By Southwest festivities were awesome.

We had everyone from Skewby to Skyzoo and J. Nics to Nick Javas come through and drop some gems for us. The days and nights proved to be long and fruitful as word started to spread about the ‘recording studio that’s a bus’.

With so many artists steadily hearing about the bus, we had to throw things into full gear and run a beat-listening, syllable-writing, rhyme-spitting factory. In the end, it did make for some great music and footage.

In between recordings sessions and dj sets, …

Korg Kaoss Pad Quad. Yes, Please!

I love dance music. I am just as much a fan of watching it performed live as I am doing it myself. If you have ever watched a DJ or Live PA act perform it to a huge crowd, you know that every breakdown, build and beat drop invokes mass hysteria, hands in the air, bodies moving, etc. You all know what I mean. We had the opportunity to create these amazing effects using the Korg Kaoss Pad Quad.

Korg introduced the first Kaoss Pad in 1999 and has since put out the KP2, KPE1 Entrancer, KP3, Kaossilator, mini-KP, and now the KP Quad. Like it’s predecessors it utilizes an X/Y axis on a touch-pad to modulate the selected effect. The Quad uses 20 modern effects between laid out quite nicely between 4 banks, giving you the ability to use 4 at once. The buttons responded well and the 2 …

SXSW Recap 2011

Austin was an amazing experience, from the time we got there on Tuesday to leaving on Saturday, we did big things. The bus was constantly buzzing with appearances from established and up and coming emcees, producers and taste makers like Black Milk, Tanya Morgan, Tef Poe, Skip Coon, Jon Connor, Artifacts, DJ Burn One, Skyzoo, Trackstar the DJ from the Smoking Section, as well as the crew from DJ Booth. The recording process went smooth as butter and we got some great verses.

In between all the recording going on, we had a show going Wednesday night with Quality Control at Club Fuze with living legend DJ Premier headlining and spinning tracks for NYGZ, Nick Javas, and Khaleel.

In addition, cats like R.E.K.S., Artifacts (official SXSW reunion btw), Binary Star and Atlanta’s own J-Live were rockin’ the spot. The showcase also featured …

I Wonder If The DJ Will Take A Request?

Have you ever been at an event where a DJ was mixing and you thought about making a request?  Your answer will say a lot about you for sure.  I know I should be more specific in asking but I want to break it down in all instances according to my own somewhat humiliating, but mostly self-entertaining experiences.  There is a time and place for everything and the best thing to do first is listen to what is actually being played before you muster up the courage to ask for your song.  Let’s explore some scenarios.

I KNOW THE DJ

So you go in to the club where your friend is spinning and you’re ready to have a great time because the place is always busy, everyone’s a super model and the music is fresh.  You want to find your groove but you can’t until you hear your song so …

DJ Wayne Ski & DJ Daai Lo @ ATC During WMC 2011 | Unique Squared Mobile Studio

Air Traffic Control in Miami, Florida

The air was warm, beats were plentiful, and The Unique Squared Mobile Studio team used this great setting to hang with DJ Wayne Ski and DJ Daai Lo at ATC (Air Traffic Control) in Miami, FL. ATC is a sneaker heads’ dream oasis with exclusives, rare, and one-of-a-kind sneakers that many times are out of circulation by the time the news about them gets out. Notables such as Raekwon, Rick Ross, and Malice of The Clipse make it a regular stop when they visit Miami.

This place is filled to the gills with classic footwear as well as casual clothing and accessories for the discriminating set. During our visit, DJ Daai Lo showed us around and let us have full reign of his shop. Ok, just for filming purposes, but still..

In between sets, we had the opportunity to talk with …
