Rane Sixty-Two Review

The king has arrived.  The unveiling of the Rane 62 was one of the most heralded announcements at this year’s Winter NAMM show in Anaheim.  Their booth was one of the most popular with many enthusiasts, all-star DJs, and industry people alike gathered in awe of its majesty.  We got a sneak peak at the show and captured our first look here.  It was apparent that this new mixer was going to be hot especially with Z-Trip having a hand in its development.  When we finally had a chance to see it in action, we knew that Rane had gotten it right.  In my opinion this represents a second renaissance for Rane and Serato Scratch Live users.  Much like it’s older brother the TTM-68 there are many cool additional features that are bridging the gap between turntablists and controllerists, like expanded sampling and loop controls, but now on a …

Top 7 Rave Era Break Beat Tracks

I discovered raves and techno music back in 1991 when I was living in Orlando, Florida.  Nightclubs like AAHZ at the Beachem Theatre and The Edge provided my introduction into the DJ scene.  My love affair continued in 1992 when I moved to Virginia where the music scene thrived in close by Washington D.C. and Baltimore.  Back then we were fans of all of the music and really didn’t care about classifying different styles or genres.  We were very fortunate that the promoters booked very diverse DJs and Live acts, therefore giving us the exposure to many different types of music styles.  I loved it all, but being from Florida and having b-boy roots made it very easy for me to gravitate toward the breaks.  It was a good time for it, because so much was being produced in Florida, California, Baltimore, and even Texas.  The U.K. was even killing …

Izotope’s Stutter Edit Review

Modern EDM programming is filled with rabbit holes. You can be in the middle of inspired riffing, open a menu, discover some new widget or control function and you’re off on a tangent. Before you know it; it’s ten til midnight and the four bars you had at noon are a distant memory. The good news is, you’ve built a beat repeater matrix that ties to a delay and uses loop recording functionality to make an infinite pile of, unusable, musical garbage. So, that’s another Saturday rotting on the hard drive. In the wake of Skrillex and that Mau5 fellow, the process of creating one’s own floor filling masterpiece has been confronted with some deep expectations with regards to device building or deep automation editing. It really is the only way to get some of the chopped up, altered and mangled sounds that are so prevalent in the “dubsteppity,” electro-house-ish, …
