Super Manetron – A MIDI Mellotron App For iPhone

The Mellotron is one of those instruments we never see or hear about anymore, and that’s because the same type of concept is already integrated into the digital audio workstations and digital hardware that we use today.  In a simple sentence, the Mellotron looks like a Piano, but is actually designed to respond with pre-recorded audio clips when a note is pressed on the keyboard.  It is an idea that was quite forward thinking when it was first implemented as a music “machine”, but of course the need for it has disappeared.  It has gone the same way of the first computer system that used punch cards devices to input information – imagine if these were still around!

Well, the Mellotron has not been wiped from our memories, and naturally any type of device that can be replicated, has, in some way shape or form.  The Super Manetron is available …

The Traktor DJ App for iPad And Whether It’s Right For You

So I bought Traktor DJ for iPad Thursday.

Before I go any further I want to say again that I bought it Thursday. At the time of writing, it is Monday the following week. When I bought the product, I was thinking “I’ll just bang around with it, test out the sync functionality, set a few loops and cue points, and bang out a quick review for the blog.” That didn’t happen for two reasons:

1) I really dragged my feet on the whole “leaving Snow Leopard” thing. Snow Leopard was fine. I wanted to stay there. Over recent months, this or that driver update excluded me and I realized the day was coming when someone would force my hand. NI were the someone, and 2.6.1 was the update to do it. Mac users will want to note that full use of the app’s functionality with Traktor Pro 2.6.1  requires …

Denon AH-D7100 Music Maniac Headphones

Within the world of competing DJ manufacturers, it is as if each company has their own role to play, which is hard to break free from.  If you begin your career as a company who only makes affordable DJ products, you will have a hard time breaking free from this label and will likely never be seen as a company that makes top of the line gear.  Numark and Gemini are examples of this phenomenon, although they don’t see it as a flaw.  When they create low cost gear that performs well, it’s magical to DJs and magical to their wallets as well.

Denon has an interesting role to play here.  They have never been the norm, so to speak, and their products are actually quite unique when compared to the competition.  Their line of CD and deck players were the first to sport the spinning disc at the top, …

American Audio 14 MXR Mixer Review & Video

When buying a product like a car (something that is produced by manufacturers all over the world), you already have a keen sense of what each car maker is trying to suggest.  Luxury cars, especially the ones built by German car makers, are trying to sell you the idea that they don’t make an entry level car, rather, all of their cars only fit a “standard of perfection” and that luxury is the only way of making a car.  Then you have car makers that try to create the latest and greatest looking cars while keeping the price considerably low.  These could be likened to Japanese car makers who have done a good job at keep car prices down.  So what category do American cars fit into?

This argument is sort of analogous to the way DJ gear is sold in the states.  The Japanese have had a time longer …

Pimping Your Ride

To be a true audiophile is not easy.  For one, it requires you to have intimate knowledge of what type of gear is out there to be had, and how it works with other products.  Number two: you need to the means of affording such expensive gear, as we know that good audio gear does not come cheap (nor is it made cheaply) , and number three is the fact that audio surrounds us in nearly every aspect of entertainment.  If you are spoiled with the quality of a good home theatre system, anything less will be too noticeable and enjoyable in comparison.

Those who have a good pair of monitors for the studio may already know what I’m talking about.  You can spend hours listening to clean audio in one space, only to throw on some cheap headphones to jog with and feel like your ears have been molested …
