Tunable For Android & iOS

One item that used to be sold that isn’t sold as much anymore, is the BPM counter.  This used to be sold as an entity separate from any FX unit or mixer.  It seems odd that there would even be such a use for this device today when the same can be done using a computer, as well as most DVS programs.  But for a short while I remember these hand-held BPM counters being available at most DJ stores and record shops.  The story of that can easily be compared to the story of the guitar tuner.  Guitarists still need to tune their guitar strings, yes, but the way they go about it is not the same.

Handheld guitar tuners, even the analog ones, were something to be admired.  No longer did you need to keep a piano around the house if you wanted to keep your guitar in …

Sol Republic Master Tracks Headphones

Rarely do we see a new headphone design appear without it being tested to ensure that the general public will actually come to accept it.  This is not to say that there aren’t innovative designs out there waiting to discovered – it just that most DJs are weary of something flashy, and great claims about a headphone’s design don’t mean much until they are tested in the real world.  This is why Sennheiser HD-25 II’s have been so successful for this long.  Newer companies have been smart to follow the less is more design approach knowing that bells and whistles simply add to the list of things that can break or fall apart.

The TMA-1’s have a small following of users, and this is because the design is so simple.  Basically, there are no swivels or hinges that are normally associated with live DJing and cueing.  As nice as …

Where Does Lil Wayne Belong?

In terms of rap and hip hop, how do you define the best rapper alive?  The criterion for this judgment parallels the same criteria for how we label DJs and musicians.  Obviously, short terms success does not mean much in this industry, and YouTube is full of one hit wonders and viral videos looking for overnight success.  To be a well known artist who is worthy of being called the best it takes more than producing music for the masses, you need to have influence.  Hip-Hop as a whole seems to have had a greater impact on modern day life than any other genre of music – you can tell if you look at the way people dress.  Clearly they aren’t wearing raver beads to school and work.

Lil Wayne may not be the most loved rapper, but he has been in the game for longer than most.  His career …

Gemini FirstMix Pro

Of all of the companies who are out there creating new and innovative DJ MIDI controller – Gemini is probably in last place considering all things.  It’s not to say that their products aren’t worth buying or taking a look at, it’s just that the controller market is heavily saturated to the point where innovation is left only for the guys who are already successful.  The ones who want to break into the field of controllers have to go with a recognized design and hope that they can pull the same thing off at a lower price.  Numark probably holds the record for having different levels of pricing for various MIDI controllers out there.  But Gemini is close behind.

With all of the commotion caused by ReLoop and their new controller, it’s a wonder that Gemini has even entered the game at all – but they have.  It started with …

The 3 Biggest Mistakes I Made at The Start Of My DJ Career

We often hear of the term “writer’s block”, and even though that seems very specific and explicit – the term can apply to just about anybody working in a creative field.  Writer’s block is not an external force and it doesn’t mean that the creative juices have ceased to exist – it means that the writer has mentally caused themselves to stop producing.  The key point here is that this is something that is brought on internally.  Once the writer figures this out, they can go back to being productive and know that it was all just an imaginary phase.  Musicians have this problem too and it has to do with the idea of success.

Whenever we start a new task or a new project we are already creating a mental picture of what it should turn out like.  This mental picture is a creation of our minds, based on …
