The Electro-Music emSynth

Does there come a point where instruments and other devices are far too shrunk down to be of any real importance?  We tried this with cell phones – do you remember when they got to the size where you couldn’t even press a key on the pad without hitting a bunch of extra numbers?  Look at phones today, there are getting bigger.  They might slimmer than ever but they are certainly wider than normal.  Maybe it is because we’ve figured out that we need the make use of the space we have, while somehow keep things on the small side.

Synthesizers have gotten even smaller as well, but they have still retained their thickness so that they can’t be split in half on accident.  Modern digital synthesizers are different story.  Some of these devices are no bigger than a USB stick and will likely be built into tiny devices in …

Smack My Batch Up Automates Sample Processing

One of the most difficult aspects of using a VST plug-in in Ableton, or any other plug in for that matter is understands how it truly works.  For most of us, it is magic.  We take an instrument and apply some effects to it and out comes the type of sound that we want.  Some of us would prefer to have a more in-depth understanding of how it all works together.  Unfortunately, this is above and beyond what we can understand without looking at the code itself.  Fortunately, smart developers have made it possible for us to basically explore the possibilities, with any sound.

This plug-in known as “Smack My Bitch Up” actually takes an existing sample from a plug in and applies effects to it to create a new plug-in.  The workflow is brilliantly laid out on the screen so any user can understand how this plug-in is …

American Audio ETR-1000 Headphones

American Audio isn’t the first company that comes to your head when you think of DJ devices and DJ products.  They do happen to have a wide range of gear that touches everything from lighting to digital decks – but they don’t have a real foothold over the market when it comes to mixers or headphones.  Still, they have items that have been brought to market, and like any other gear company, they seek to improve where they have left off.  Their ETR-100 headphones do not have any sort of unique design that we haven’t seen before – but this is something to be noted.

They share the shape and design of the older Sony series headphones, with swiveling cups and a rather thick head/neck band.  Drivers are large on this over the ear setup and it looks to be built with overall comfort in mind.  While they aren’t …

DJ Qbert Scratch Theory Live

Every DJ who has tried to make money off of their hobby has been faced with a few problems and dilemmas.  It goes like this: you want to play the music you love and you want to share it with other people, but you also want to profit from your hard work and energy.  You begin to realize that the general crowd and club owners only like a certain type of music to be played at their clubs, even if it is not what you like.  Wedding DJs know this the most, for they require little skill to make a lot of money.  It simply comes down to playing the right songs at the right time.  The Club DJ must perform under much more stress but still gets paid less than the wedding DJ.  What about if you battle?

Guys like Qbert are lucky to have made a company based …

DJ Player v6 for iPad & iPhone

The Numark iDJ pro is one of those rare gems that comes along from a company who is not known to push out instant winners all the time.  Let’s face it – Numark has a lot of products on the shelves these days.  Much of these are hit and miss products and have such a low production value that they can afford to lose a small profit here and there by testing the waters to see what works.  This strategy is different from someone like Pioneer who seems to only make products that sell well – but they’re expensive.  When Numark makes something that the people like, they capitalize on it and push even further into its research.

The iDJ pro is one of the few that actually has a unique design; the iPad is incorporated into the mixer itself, meaning no laptop stands or other makeshift crutches to hold …
