Spill Beer or Booze on Your Mixer, Laptop, or Controller

I think that the way DJ gear is treated is very unique when compared to other types of gear and electronics in general.  For example, if you have outdoor speakers that are disguised as garden rocks, then they are likely designed to handle the elements like wind, water, and earth.  When you have a monitor for mastering songs, these are usually mounted high enough that they never need to be touched.  The worst thing that can happen to them is that they will collect dust near their air holes.  DJ controllers and mixers have a much rougher time in comparison.

This is highly sensitive gear that has to be transported from place to place.  During usage they will encounter things like hard bumps and possibly spills.  The spills can be the worst because it is never water that gets spilled on it – it is always something like beer or …

What’s the Deal With Bass Augmentation Devices—and Why Should You Care?

Ever since the first portable Walkman was invented, the idea of attaching music to a person became a part of history.  The headphones and earphone market currently reflects that idea.  We can choose to use headphones that are under ten dollars, or we can shell out for a pair that can cost thousands.  The point of it all is that we simply eliminate the need to have more equipment around us, and furthermore the need to have space in a room.  The more complex the listening needs become, the more obvious it is that a good pair of headphones or a proper monitoring system will need to be had.

The biggest problem of any producer who has tried to mix down a track is the fact that audio sounds different from system to system.  Simple things like adding furniture or bodies to a room can alter the sounds that …

Behringer NOX606 Pro DJ Mixer

It feels as if Behringer has often gotten left behind in the DJ world.  They are usually not the first to capitalize on a new idea, however, they do a great job of taking a concept and making it affordable to all of us.  The biggest bane of a new DJ who wants a mixer that can do it all is of course the steep cost of things.  The hardest cost to deal with is the price of the mixer – because you do not necessarily see the value in it right away.  A club mixer usually has up to 4 channels to mix with – and more often than not there are a slew of effect added to it to make it worthwhile.

Pioneer offers the standard DJM series, which are known to be the club standard in this case.  You can expect to spend nearly a few thousand …

Cerwin Vega XD4 / XD8s Powered Speakers & Subwoofer

I am a firm believer that a DJ booth monitor can be much more than that.  In fact, I would rather use the same monitors as bookshelf speakers for my computer gaming than to buy an entire new set of speakers for each system.  If I had the money, I suppose I would never have to re-plug anything again – but that is not the case.  My only gripe about the monitors is their lack of low end and their lack of a remote control for the volume.  I have to reach over about two feet to adjust the knobs, but hey – big deal right?

Thankfully, we are getting to the point where studio monitors aren’t always the best choice for the scenario.  Unless you are full time, sitting behind a computer getting paid to master tracks – odds are that you only need them on occasion.  Cerwin Vega …

Hum: A Songwriter’s Notebook for iPhone

Any musician or creative person knows that creativity can strike at any time – usually when they least expect it.  Often we do not have the time to record these thoughts when we need them.  Ironically, we have devices such as phones and tablets that make it easier for us to jot things down, but we feel less compelled to use them.  Why is that?  Sometimes I feel like a pen and a piece of paper would make my life a lot easier, but yet again I fail to use it to my advantage.

Some smart people have thought of easier ways to get to your phone quicker, in order to jot down ideas – but this one is specifically created for music makers and musicians who have the thought on the edge of their tongue, but have nowhere to put it.  So will such an idea every takeoff and …
