The art of imperfection

DJs are well known to be harsh critics of themselves and intense perfectionists when it comes to any subject.  They can play a four hour long set which basically comes out perfect, but will kick themselves over a simple transition that didn’t go as planned.  Most would say to ignore the one mistake for the sake of the entire piece, but the DJ might spend hours practicing that part until it is perfect.  For the audience, imperfection is something perfect in a world where there is this desire to be exact.  A DJ who spins with vinyl records knows how to make music out of imperfection, and that is why they are admired by so many.

The DJ who uses beat gridded songs might receive less respect from fellow DJs because it fails to take that humanistic risk that vinyl records are known for.  Producers are wise to add small …

Performing is an art that changes as long as it is progressing.  There are many ways that a person can perform these days, and strange new performances are being created all the time, just for the sake of art.  One thing that has not changed about live performances is how the performer controls their emotions on stage.  Any kid who has to stand in front of a huge audience knows what it feels like to have some sort of fright.  This could be genuine fright of being in front of people, or it could have something to do with their lack of study for the performance in hand.

From a young age, people learn how to control their nervousness on stage.  They can do a great job by simply being very prepared for the job, or they can actually allow the eye watching them to encourage a good performance.  People …

The power of a trash can ending

Stage performers of all types know a few things about performing that many professional DJs have yet to learn.  They employ various techniques to create impressions that are not there or perhaps to highlight certain facts over others.  Bands who have played live know all about these subtle tricks and how to control the mood of a crowd – if they showed up to a concert and are only playing 1 song, then you know they are going to be playing a hit.  But if they are playing a 4 hour show, there is going to be a certain type of flow within the show.  They might mix in some oldies with some classics, and they will certainly let you know when it is time to clap.

Setting the energy flow at a concert is very important and almost always predictable.  Usually, a big bang ending is necessary, and there …

Make your music photos tell your story

Videos these days are the most compelling use of media I have ever seen.  Sometimes we are forced to watch them, and some of them draw in our attention regardless of how hard we try to avoid it.  In the music world, videos are everything.  Before we could actually watch a music video, music could only be heard live or recorded.  The aliveness of the video music programming allowed the listeners to feel like they were next to a real performer.  However, videos Do take time to watch, and people are less patient than they used to be.

A photo can do an even more amazing job of telling a story as long as the frame is perfectly set.  As a music artist, photos can give off vibes and impressions that may be crucial in grabbing the attention of your potential fans.  Photo shoots as well as candid photos can …
