IK Multimedia iRig HD Review

IK Multimedia are arguably one of the most innovative companies when it comes to iOS integrated hardware devices. They not only have great MIDI keyboards and microphones that can connect to an iPhone or iPad, but they also have a very functional iPad clip that can be attached to a mic stand very easily. The original iRig was one of the first solid guitar interfaces that could be connected to an iOS device. This time around IK Multimedia have improved on that initial design with the new iRig HD iOS guitar interface.

Features

The iRig HD comes with three different cables to get you connected with your guitar and iOS device. Included in the box are a 30 pin cable, a lighting cable, and a USB cable. This allows you to get connect to every generation of iOS device as well as your computer. The iRig HD has a high quality 1/4 inch input for your guitar and a gain adjustment knob on the side of the interface. The iRig HD has an LED light that will illuminate different colors depending on the status of your connection.

The guitar input has been improved to give you better fidelity when connected to an iOS device.

It’s a pretty simple device and that’s because you are going to find the majority of your functionality within the Amplitube software and iOS application. You can certainly use other popular FX and amplifier modeling software available on the market, but if you are using this with an iOS device, we found the Amplitube App to be one of the more extensive, fun, and impressive sounding applications. This is especially true when compared to some of the other popular iOS applications including things like GarageBand.

The Amplitube app sounds great and has tons of options for sounds from cabinets to FX pedals.

Review

Guitar players can be rather discriminating when it comes to devices like this and I can understand why. If you are an active guitar player who plopped down some serious cash for a custom Gibson or Fender guitar, you wouldn’t want to limit it’s potential by plugging it up to an iPad amplifier modeler. I get it. Trust me. However it’s not always easy to get a full electric sound from your guitar when on the road and in tight spaces. While in those environments, you need to hear an amplified sound and some FX pedals too to really get a feel for how that lead part is going to work or how that rhythm part fits with the groove. These are scenarios where the iRig HD shines. The audio fidelity is not only top notch, but when you consider that your only real gear is a guitar, an interface that can fit in your pocket, and your phone or tablet, you begin to see the promise of universal portability.

The iRig HD is the ultimate solution for the guitarist on the go. It’s fun, it’s practical, and you can find it for a great price at UniqueSquared.com
