The Elektron Analog Keys synthesizer was unveiled on November 23rd at a very intimate showcase in Berlin, Germany. A few blogs and other media outlets were on hand to capture the first real glimpses of this new hyped up synthesizer and eager synth nuts were glued to their browsers for the unveiling. A few days have passed since the unveiling and Elektron have released a full set of specifications for us to peruse. A quick look at the Analog Keys leads one to believe that this is simply an Analog 4 with keys. It sure does look that way and Analog 4 owners are asking, “so what are the actual differences between the Analog Keys and the Analog 4?” Those that do not already own an Analog 4 are simply asking, “do I need this synthesizer and why?” These are great questions to ask in a marketplace that has …

You might have met a few nerds in your lifetime, but not all of these nerds are of the same caliber. You have your run of the mill nerds; the type of nerds who seem to be pretty good at their school work and well as scarring away the opposite sex. Beyond that, you have your music geeks (some of them might be marching band geeks) – but then you get into a more refined set of skills that a nerd can possess. These are the true hackers and tinkerers who are involved in the sound is made. What is truly impressive about these folks is that they might not even look like a computer nerd at all. Some of them have all the makings of a musician, but they spend their time tweaking together old gear.
What these old synthesizer nerd do is nothing short of a mystery for …

So what is the difference between a nu-school and an old-school producer? Perhaps the amount of grey hair they have on their head? It would really be hard to distinguish one from the other without knowing something about them. I will say this – modern producers often have the luxury of being able to work with modern gear, but as a consequence they lack some of the older techniques that had to be used when gear wasn’t up to par. This is a common phenomenon with scratchers and DJs. You can tell by what techniques they use, just how long they have been performing in the business.
A modern producer is likely to have a slew of keyboard synthesizers, a few drum pads and drum machines, and of course, a computer to wire it all together. An older producer may have some gear that a modern producer would see as …

Some synthesizer players come from classically trained families who have learned to play such instruments as piano and guitar. They look at a synthesizer and see a piano that can be shaped to play strange sounds in place of a regular piano tone. Some synthesizer plays grow up without ever having touched a piano in their lives. They look at the white and black keys on the piano and they do not see a thousand different types of “piano”, they see a unique instrument that is unlike any other. In fact, some would have a hard time calling it an instrument in the classical sense; they see it as a machine to produce strange noises and effects.
The second camp of users might be seen as the geeks of the synth world. The stuff they create may not be agreeable with your sense, and it may lack certain qualities like …

Chad Hugo, along with co-producer Pharrell Williams, are easily considered among the most successful producers of all time and especially within the last few decades. Blending their own musical influences with eastern sounds and a knack for pop sensibility, Hugo along with Williams have been instrumental in crafting such mega hits as “I’m a Slave 4 U” (Britney Spears), “Hot in Herre” (Nelly), and “U Don’t Have to Call” (Usher). While most of you may be familiar with Chad Hugo as one half of super producers The Neptunes and member of the group N.E.R.D., others of you may be familiar with his current DJ duo called Missile Command which includes Daniel Biltmore. What you may not know yet about Chad Hugo is that he was asked by Moog to make sounds for their new all white re-issued Slim Phatty analog synthesizers.
Hugo pulls influences from his youth in Virginia Beach to his professional work …
