The concept of the one man band has really come quite a ways, and what we are left with is really a professional solution to an old problem. Do you remember the old one man band acts, where one person would control a piano, drums, and guitar using some strange contraption of Rube Goldberg inspired wires and pulleys? If you live near a boardwalk where local talent is always readily available – you can find guys like this who do it for the sheer entertainment value. Some have even made a living this way, performing on the streets.
Today, that entire idea can be done professionally, and it doesn’t need to be done on the streets either. A modern producer might have little more than a laptop and a good DAW – but that is only the beginning of where it all starts. A true one man band production setup …

We often think of computer programmers and picture programmers sitting on their asses for ten hours a day, typing away at a keyboard and staring into a computer screen. Is this any fun? Perhaps the challenge of trying to code their way into something new is part of the fun that these programmers feel when typing away. On the other hand, we look at music producers from a different light. We associate them with people who are fun and outgoing, who wouldn’t dare sit down and type away at something boring for half of the day. The truth is that they both share a similar task.
