NAMM 2014: ADJ’s new lighting range

For only a very short period in DJ technology, lighting was ahead of anything else the DJ could image.  Picture DJs before CDs were popular, and before computers were ever involved in lighting.  The DJ was basically stuck on stage with whatever tools he had, but the special effects guys had a much harder task.  Without any sort of automated lighting, it was on them to control lights with the push of a button.  Some very talented folks were able to make do with what they had.  Now that DJing is completely digital these days, you would expect lighting to be better as well – but it isn’t.

Lighting may be computer controlled and safe – but that doesn’t mean it is any easier to setup than the DJ gear.  The DJ has to bring less with them to run music for the night – but the sound and lighting …

Lighting For DJs, Part 2

For some DJs who have a limited amount of resources to work with, lighting is not difficult at all.  In fact, lighting is really not necessary, assuming that there are other people to take care of it for you.  At most, the DJ needs a small light for themselves so they can navigate their gear in a pitch black room.  I once was a DJ for a small sorority gathering, and my setup really didn’t need much since it was a formal occasion.  All I really had was one of those cheap disco balls sitting right on top of my monitors.

If you are a mobile DJ, much more of expected from you.  Not only do you need to bring the music, you also need to bring the sound equipment and lighting equipment.  Since there is nobody else around to control the lighting itself, the use of an automated system …

Dubstep Christmas Lights

Depending on where you live, the holiday season brings out the best and worst in people.  I don’t mean Christmas cheer or real life Grinches that cant’ stand the holidays, but rather, the types of decorations people put up around their houses.  Holiday lights are pretty standard – and with LED technology it means that we don’t have to deal with shattered glass bulbs or short circuiting like we used to.  In fact, with all the cool LED modules and decorations that are out there, one can be even more creative and take Christmas decorations to a whole different level.

Years ago, one eccentric neighbor went “all out” with his lighting and used sequenced Christmas lights that flashed to different patterns, based on the song that was playing.  I believe he played his tunes from a loudspeaker placed around his house.  The next year, he took it a bit further …
