They say that technology is the double edged sword. For all the good it can bring to us, it can also be used against us or as weapon if we choose. But does the same logic apply when advances in culture and taste in music are pursued? By now, you have already heard of the infamous nightclub that booted DJ Shadow off stage, due to his “futuristic” taste in music. The problems here are many – but a more fundamental question has been created from the outcome, and that is, “What is futuristic music?” This assumes that music doesn’t advance and that a stagnant set of rules for music creation somehow exists.
This is all too true of any club where DJs have to cater to the lowest common denominator in the crowd. There is a fat oxymoron that stares you down in the face when you ask a DJ …

If there is one relationship that needs to be solid before a DJ can successfully gig a packed club, it’s the relationship with the manager. Owners and DJs can chew the fat all they like, but if there isn’t a clear outline of what’s expected from both of them, then the night can be a bust. Even a requested DJ who has been flown thousands of miles to play at a Las Vegas Gig can wind up receiving the boot if he or she doesn’t understand what is being asked of them. Even if you are being paid thousands of dollars to perform, know that you are still at the mercy of the club and its attendees. It’s the drinks that bring in the money right?

DJ Shadow was kicked off the decks this past weekend at Mansion in Miami while spinning live in support of his All Bases Covered tour. By all accounts, some of those who paid thirty dollars to get in the door to see him didn’t actually care to see him. Pigeons and Planes probably put it best when theorizing that “the crowd was either not into his set or the promoters were just so amped to get their resident back on to drop more Top 40-inspired tracks that one walked right up to the decks and apparently asked Shadow to stop.” The same thing happened to Dennis Ferrer earlier in the year, as has been mentioned by almost anyone talking about this. I’ll leave it to all those other sources to elaborate on the silliness of booking these DJs if all you need is someone to throw Guetta and the party …

DJ Shadow has dug into the past of his old works to bring you a new album that features songs from an older era. The album is titled “Total Breakdown: Hidden Transmissions from the MPC Era 1992-1996” and is pretty much self-explanatory.
DJ Shadow, along with a handful of other dj/producers, was one of the first on the scene to create MPC music by sampling some of the most obscure vinyl records around. He’s probably one of the biggest “crate diggers” out there, spending days on end looking for the correct sound. Most of the songs on this album incorporate rock, funk, and soul jazz clips.…
