Moog Factory Tour: Slim Phatty, Little Phatty, and Moog Guitar

The next part in our Moog Factory Tour series takes us behind the scenes into the craftsmanship and history behind the popular Moog Slim Phatty and Moog Little Phatty monophonic, analog synthesizers. Jim also walks us through the history behind the innovative Moog Guitar and talks about why it is so different from a traditional guitar and electric stringed instruments. The point that Jim and Moog Music Inc. want to drive home is that they are crafting their instruments in the same ways they always have. They keep the construction of their instruments in house and continue to use analog signal paths in an era when many companies are moving towards digital. This should be no surprise to those loyal Moog customers, but it’s still great to hear that Moog Music Inc. is staying true to the legacy that their founder Bob Moog left behind.

Vox AGA30 – An acoustic amp with its own voice

If the ability to scratch on a vinyl turntable represents the true nature of a DJ’s skills, then the ability to shred on an acoustic guitar should shine light on the guitarists’ talent as well.  Unfortunately, there are a lot of minute details that simply cannot be heard on an unamplified acoustic guitar – to which there is only one solution: acoustic amplification.

Again, boosting an acoustic guitar is never ideal (compared to an electric guitar), but this doesn’t mean your options are nonexistent.  The Vox AGA30 is a small 30-watt amp that boasts a reasonable output level and some distortion and reverb options as well.…

3D Printing, From Headphones to Synth Accessories, Shows Both Promise and Obstacles

The future of 3D printing looks promising – after all, who wouldn’t want to print out an odd part that might take months to ship otherwise?  While it’s easily stated, it is the proverbial “not easily done”.  The first obstacle in this industry is the “know how” and requires knowledge of computer aided design software.  The second obstacle is finding the tools and materials to actually print objects.  You would take a small hit in cost as well as the time to get this properly calibrated.

While these two obstacles can be overcome, the issue of materials is not one that can be defeated.  Common household plastic devices, such as those that are used to create headphones, can be toxic or deadly – which is why they are created in factories far removed from people’s houses.  Can the same properties of plastic be mimicked without creating hazards?…

J Mascis’ Guitar Stolen at Dinosaur Jr. Show

Is there a law of equivalent exchange taking place in the rock world?  Sonic Youth were fortunate enough to have 2 stolen guitars finally returned to them after more than 10 years of them being missing – but now another musician, J Mascis, has had his guitar stolen from a show in Eugene, Oregon.

Mascis’ guitar went missing after the show, and the guitarist is asking for any information on the return of the missing instrument, which is a rare Squire Jazzmaster.  A picture of the guitar has been released, and it has a few off characteristics like pick-ups with new screws, and a dent in the neck.…

Sonic Youth Recover Stolen Guitars After 13 Years

Sonic Youth had been in music news recently after getting back together to re-release some classic tunes for their adoring fans.  Now, it seems like their adoring fans have gotten back together for Sonic Youth.  A notorious theft took place after one of their shows in 1999, when unknown thieves raided their van at a show in Orange County.  The Band members were furious and did what they could to retrieve the stolen equipment.

A young teen had mentioned to them at the time that he knew the whereabouts of their infamous guitar; but the band dismissed the kid’s words.  Recently, 2 of their guitars have mysteriously re-appeared on their doorsteps.…
