Bandcamp Launches New Players, Tweet To Play

Social music services are keen to have their own way of doing things in hope of attracting a particular set of fans.  If each service looked and did the same thing as their competitor, it would make choosing much more difficult for the users.  Take a look at the way Soundcloud is ran – they don’t fill the pages up with advertisements are large pictures, instead, the layout is music based.  The only thing that you will find filling your screen is waveforms from various artists directly linked to your feed.  They have also made it so that users can find out some information about their favorite artists without getting spammed with pictures or details.

Bandcamp is built with the same goal in mind as Soundcloud, but its focus tends to rest more on the social aspect of the service, rather than the hosting of music files.  There tends to …

“Good For Pandora, Bad For AM/FM”

The internet has really given us an easy way to search for just about anything we want.  We have access to videos and music on demand, and we even have internet radio to stream in the background so we can do other thoughtless activities (what the internet was designed for right?).  With all of the media that we have at our fingertips, we are still a pretty lazy group of people.  When I get into my car, I have to plug my smartphone into my auxiliary connection so I can play music from my phone.  But then I have to do things like change the song, and that requires me to look down from time to time.

It interferes with my driving so sometimes I just listen to the radio instead.  I might not like every song that I hear, but it is something I can do carelessly without having …

Pandora Reacts To iTunes Radio Announcement

It is very interesting to see what two competitors say about each other when they are fighting for the same thing.  In a personal setting I’m sure that they aren’t as polite or politically correct when speaking about their opponent, but in the public light they seem to try and be as civil as possible – offering them the best of luck in the future.  This is what the high road looks like; congratulating your opponent on their move, while also taking the time to toot your own horn in the process.  The latest argument comes from the competition between Pandora and iTunes Radio.  Pandora is not the happiest camper, getting to see Apple try and take a chunk of their pie, but Pandora has more going for itself.

Pandora has been around longer than Facebook itself, and has had time to perfect their system of music delivery.  Since …

Music has died now I’ve thrown away my CDs

Believe it or not, it is harder than ever these days to have a music collection that you are truly proud of.  That isn’t to say that we don’t have enough music or enough choice in our music – but maybe it is to say that we have such an abundance of choices that we don’t really care about the music we own.  Think about the times when music was hard to get.  You could either sit by your radios, hoping your favorite song would come on (and then press record on your cassette when ready), or you have to think of what you wanted and go to the record store to buy a CD.  When we thought of music as something scarce, we were more likely to cherish what we owned.

I’d say that most producers and DJs have music scattered about their collection of hard drives, laptops, …

Apple in Talks to Launch Internet Radio Service

Apple has been looking to find ways to break into the online-radio industry in order to become an even greater presence in the digital music industry that it already is.  This seems like the right move to make considering they already dominate the mp3 player market with their iPods, and their iTunes store streamlines the process of taking it from your computer to your device.  Like all things apple, their internet radio service would be proprietary – meaning that delivery would take place though an apple endorsed product or program, instead of relying on a traditional web browser based medium.

Their biggest competitor Pandora would likely see some of its customers lost, if every goes the way Apple intends it to.  There are, however, licensing issues that need to be overcome in order to strengthen profits through advertising.  Pandora is subject to steep licensing fees by artists and their label; …
