Artist Spotlight: Huda Hudia

Huda Hudia has been a veteran and pioneer of the Florida breakbeat scene for over 15 years.  Originally hailing from Tampa, Florida he began his career in the early 90′s, graduated from the University of South Florida, and ran his highly successful record label, Kaleidoscope Records.  I personally enjoyed opening for Huda in Florida and New Orleans on a few occasions in the mid-90′s.  He has since found his home in Atlanta, Georgia where we caught up with him and talked about his beginnings and his current status as one of the country’s still highly booked DJs.

How did you get started playing and producing music?

I started playing piano with a small casio keyboard given to me when I was 10 years old.  I started producing music after I graduated from college in 1996.

Lets talk about playing out live, where can I find you these days?

From all the local …

Artist Spotlight: Kid Cedek

This week’s artist spotlight is on the fireball from the DMV, Kid Cedek.  His meteoric rise to predominance is a result of relentless gigging, releasing numerous remixes and original productions, and flawless marketing and branding.  We can all learn something from the manner in which Kid Cedek, aka Merchicedek Reyes, is taking his career to the next level.  It’s one thing to be focused on your career in every action, and in every detail of your every day routine, but it is also paramount to challenge yourself, expand your abilities, and constantly hone your craft.  This defines Kid Cedek and it truly shows in his music and his live performance.  It really helps that he’s a pretty nice guy too.

How did you get started playing and producing music?

DJ Obeyah from Washington D.C. helped me out by giving me some Numark TTX’s when I was learning in the beginning, …

Artist Spotlight: Street Lurkin

Kicking off our Artist Spotlight series are some dear friends of ours from Atlanta, Street Lurkin.  Ryan “Oh Snap Kid” Purcell and Lee “Hxllywxxd” Bates have long been ambassadors of the Atlanta underground movement.  They took separate paths consisting of nightlife photography and video production, art design, and event promotion, among many other brave endeavors throughout the years.  They found their common ground in music production and live DJ performance and soon formed Street Lurkin.

This might sound typical of many successful electro acts who create incredibly catchy, devastatingly funky, melodic electro and dubstep music, but what really separates Street Lurkin is that they are a marketing machine.  In less than 2 years of existence they have played and destroyed over 100 events throughout the U.S. including Winter Music Conference, SXSW, and Identity Festival.  It also helps that Ryan is co-founder along with Le Castle Vania of one of the southeast’s …

Ryan Noise and the APC40

Before I begin please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Zack Røcket Timms or just Røcket for short and I work on the video production team as a producer, editor and all around media production specialist. I have been editing films for over a decade now and recently crossed the line from hobbyist to working DJ here in Atlanta. I’ve been with Unique Squared for about three months now behind the camera editing and shooting and am going to take a more public role with the company so look forward to more blog posts and video appearances from me in the near future.

Ryan Noise is the only guy I know using Ableton and the APC40 in this way. It’s amazing watching how he pipes in live video to be mixed down and edited during shows. It demonstrates the APC40′s potential to do whatever you want, through the …

The DJ Life And Timeslots: DJ SMILES in Studio

Atlanta night life is very diverse in terms of dance music. I love it because I like to mix in and out of different genres while I play out, and it makes for a great night. DJ Smiles, now living and thriving in Los Angeles, was once recognized as one of Atlanta’s most versatile and highly technical DJs. He builds his sets with banging house, hip-hop, and electro before messing you up with his trademark B-more flavored tracks. His remixes are highly coveted and have been used to fill floors, start the party, and ultimately close your best set. We recently made him one of our own Unique Squared Artists and he dropped by our studio to rap about DJ gear, the new DDJ-S1 controller, and his new music.

Full Interview with DJ Smiles:
