Fan-Funding Lessons

One of the more difficult parts about making a great idea a reality is funding the operation.  There is a need for creativity on all sides, but there is also the need for production – and one of them won’t do well without the other.  Traditionally, a good idea needs to come with a great sales pitch and a financier to get the ball rolling.  The trouble is that good ideas are everywhere, so how are we to know what is worth our investment, and what is simply a cost liability?  We all have those friends who think they have an idea for the next big thing, but nine times out of ten they’ll do nothing about it except talk.

Kickstarter is a great medium to fund these ideas, since it doesn’t require just one person to finance an operation.  If a million people donated a dollar to a campaign …

Keith McMillen Instruments QuNeo 3D MIDI Controller Review

Yes, we’ve all heard about the buzz over Keith McMillen’s QuNeo 3D Midi controller.  This meager kickstarter project grew to be beast in every sense of the word.  There were the expected manufacturing issue that caused a delay and a great deal of worry, but it seems like the dust has settled and this are as they should be.

QuNeo 3D Multitouch Pad Controller

The long anticipated QuNeo has finally hit the markets, after delays and setbacks from their kickstarter beginning.  It’s similar to other midi controllers out there, but the designers took the time to figure out just what was needed and what wasn’t necessary.  The build quality looks promising, and the included editor makes it easy to make quick updates to the unit or to its firmware.

As for its use as a DJ’s peripheral tool, that question is still yet to be answered.  The placement of the line faders and knobs doesn’t exactly seem like it would be optimal, but we’ll give it time to see first.…

Steve Albini Slams Amanda Palmer for Asking Fans to Play in Her Band for Free

The ability to garner financial support for a cause astonishing; we’re talking about Kickstarter.  While some developers ask for funds with the promise of receiving the polished product once it’s complete, Amanda Palmer from the Dresden Dolls has asked her fans to fund her new record.  What are they getting in return?

Apparently she was able to raise 1.2 million dollars to fund her new album titled “Theatre is Evil”.  If that wasn’t enough for her, she also asked her fans to pay for professional orchestra players to accompany her on her tour.  The fans will supposedly receive little in return, except some appreciation for her efforts and a few drinks on the house.…
