NI Traktor Kontrol S2 MK2

It wasn’t long ago that the Kontrol series by Native Instrument began making its new spot next to some of the biggest brands out there.  What set NI’s controllers apart from others was their unique pricing strategy.  As a brand, NI has been known to make middle to higher end gear, and their Kontrol series was no exception.  These weren’t price up there with the two thousand dollar mixers that Rane was offering, nor was it priced below a few hundred dollars like Numark and others.  It was at a reasonable price for those looking to build an all in one system.

Today, Kontrol series products are old news, and we may see new revisions of them right around the corner each year.  While the main design of them never really changes, NI gets a chance to add little enhancements and fixes that may have plagued earlier versions.  Really, the …

Vestax VCI-380 – Serato ITCH DJ Controller Review

Since the beginning of DJing and DJ culture Vestax has been heavily influential in evolution of the art form.  With the advent of turntablism and controllerism they have consistently had a presence with products like the PMC series battle mixers, PDX series turntables, and the VCI range of controllers.  A host of incredible DJs and turntablists, including Q*Bert, Carl Cox, DJ Krush, Johnny Fiasco, and Rafik, have endorsed their products for years, choosing the Vestax range of mixers, turntables, and controllers as their weapons of choice.  The quality and reliability of the Vestax product is undeniable, and their technologically advanced design and versatility is maintained in their new range of midi pad and DJ controllers.

One of the influencers of modern controllerism, Ean Golden, first used a Vestax VCI-100 to originate a culture and a style that is more widely used among many of …

Mid-Range DJ Controller Comparison

Which controller should I get? This is the question of the year for me and believe me, I like to answer it. There are so, so many to choose from these days and we always do our best to bring you all up to speed whenever we get them in. However, we have found doing “side by side” comparisons on the ones that are not only the newest, but the ones that are similar in price, feature set, and size make for a pretty good blog and video. We have received a good response when we have done them in the past so it’s certainly time that we do another one. This go round we have chosen four of the newer controllers in the mid-range priced between $500-$600. Here are the players.

NI Traktor Kontrol S2 Review

Oh, my what a difference a year makes for Native Instruments.  Almost a year ago we were all introduced to arguably the most anticipated Traktor dj controller to date, the Kontrol S4.  It combined Traktor Scratch, the X1, and dare I say Maschine (construction wise) into one complete package and made many djs, including myself, cheat on their turntables.  I officially made the switch by Thanksgiving after reconciling with my turntables.  Native Instruments will further tempt the purists by releasing it’s latest offering, the Kontrol S2.  We dropped some quick Hors d’oeuvres on you last month about the S2, and now we are lucky enough to have received an advance unit sent to our studios for a test drive.

Set Up

The Kontrol S2 comes will be shipping with the a newly updated Traktor Pro 2 which is convenient if you want to upgrade the the S4 in the …
