8 ways to use your 4-deck DJ controller

It is common to see a digital deck with only one or two jog dials become capable of controlling double that amount.  Some of the newer model Denon CD players can actually function as two separate decks using the flip of a switch.  Although there are a few logistical problems with this approach, the idea that you can completely eliminate a deck from the picture has been built upon in later model controllers as well as DVS updates.  Often times, a beginner DJ will purchase a 4-channel deck like the Kontrol S4, thinking that they may actually find a time when they want to mix four songs.

Little do they know – mixing 4 tracks is harder than it looks.  Even mixing three decks together can be a logistical nightmare when you have to deal with pitch shifts and uneven phrases.  But having 4 channels doesn’t necessarily mean that …

DJ Controller Buyer’s Guide 2013 Now Online

Less established gear companies are beginning to have their heads pop up through the controller market with much less difficulty.  Years ago, there were only few respectable controllers out there for DJs who wanted to DJ with less equipment and less bulk.  If it wasn’t for the hackers and builders out there who were creating their own midi controllers from gutted MIDI keyboards, gear companies might not have taken the whole controller setup as seriously as they do today.  More gear entering the market is a good thing for consumers – it give us tier levels of cost, as well as many options regarding whether or not we want a modular setup or an all-in-one system.

NI’s Kontrol S4 is literally the embodiment of everything controllerists and DJs have been trying to achieve and I can see Pioneer’s DDJ-SX becoming something like their club standard CDJ-1000 of the future.  There …

Your Questions. Can I Rip My Old Vinyl With A Traktor Kontrol S4?

Traktor is a DVS loaded with tons of options, settings, and abilities to use as a digital DJ.  Obviously the most useful application of Traktor is using it to trigger cues and samples from a controller, or using it to track movements of your platter.  Along with an effects bank and an onboard sampler it can be used to produce music on its own, with the help of cue points that act like sound banks in a sequencer.  One overlooked use of Traktor, is its ability to record sound from an analog device – in this case, a turntable.

While there are better programs out there to help you capture a good recording from a vinyl record, like Cubase, Traktor is capable enough as long as input settings are changed and input volumes are adjusted to prevent clipping.  To use it with Traktor set your inputs to “phono“and one …

Native Instruments Kontrol F1 – First Look

We were expecting the Kontrol F1 sometime in the next week so it was completely unexpected that someone with one would show up unannounced. By the time I had arrived in the office, I found the team frantically skirting around the room setting up the set.  I had been planning on doing an F1 demo when the unit was released and had only began to plan something out in the days prior to our unexpected visit and was unprepared to demo the unit on a whim.  I made a call to one of my friends that produces tracks with me and asked if he would send the stems from our latest track for a demo.

At about 11 o’Clock the artist made his way back to the video room carrying with him a suitcase full of just about any piece of NI gear you can imagine.  His name was Phillip and …

Ableton Vs Maschine – Which One is Best?

We stumbled upon a bit of a debate while looking into how to deal with some upcoming tutorials. Apparently, a very hot topic of debate out there is being approached as “should I get Ableton or Maschine?”  In other cases it manifests as just, “Ableton vs. Maschine.” I think this is an interesting approach to the topic. I’m not going to say this is the wrong way to approach these kind of decisions. I do, however, want to suggest that this mentality suffers from some critical issues that often make the discussion derail itself early on in a forum context.

Forums

Forums are a blessing and a curse. Some forums are extraordinarily helpful and even have policies in place about not having “flame wars” and generally being polite to one another. Other forums are less worried about this and the admins don’t intervene until the last possible second, if …
