Mackie SRM550 Powered Loudspeaker Review

Mackie’s latest foray into the powered loudspeaker market is with their SRM Series which includes the SRM650, the SRM1850 Sub, and the focus of this review, the SRM550. Mackie says they are “built like a tank,” and I can tell you with certainty that these speakers are definitely built for the road. While they carry all the power to withstand even the most abusive touring artist, they are quite light at 37 lbs., which makes them an easy carry for even the laziest member of your crew. Mackie has got the build quality to compete with other speakers in it’s price range, but how does it sound and what feature sets make it worth your hard earned cash?

First lets talk about the sound quality. On board you have a 12” high-output LF driver and a 1.4” titanium dome compression driver. Titanium compression drivers have become the standard for a lot …

Cerwin-Vega P-Series Overview

The P-Series is the latest design in the Cerwin-Vega line of powered loudspeakers. The P-1500X is a 2 way, full range speaker with 1500 watts of power and the P-1800SX is an 18 inch sub woofer with 2000 watts dynamic, and 650 watts of continuous power. The biggest appeal to the Cerwin Vega P-Series is that they pack a lot of power and sound without costing a lot when compared to other speakers with the same or similar specifications. Here are some of the highlights of the P-Series line to show you why you should keep the Cerwin Vega P-Series on your radar when choosing your next powered speaker setup.

iPad Controlled Digital Mixing Console Comparison

The Apple iPad has quickly become more than just a tablet for reading books and watching video. It is now a fully functional tool for doing all sorts of things including controlling your home security system, creating music, or having control of your home entertainment system. The pro audio world has found new and interesting ways of incorporating the iPad as well. Keyboard controllers, audio interfaces, DJ controllers, and live sound mixers are all getting a tech facelift with the application of the iPad. One of the more practical and prominent uses has been the iPad’s ability to sync with digital mixing consoles to control everything from monitor mixes to EQ settings. We first saw this with the introduction of the Presonus StudioLive and the StudioLive Remote application.

Since we first saw this at Winter NAMM 2011, more mixing consoles have been showing up which allow for intuitive and wireless control …

Cocoon Club forced into insolvency

German club goers may be disappointed to hear that one of their favorite joints may be closing up shop.  Cocoon Club in Frankfurt, Germany, has recently filed for bankruptcy after 8 years of throwing some of the biggest events at one of the most state-of-the-art facilities around.

Although the brick and mortar establishment will be closing down, the other half of Cocoon, their booking and artist Label Company, will not be affected.  Few clubs in the area were able to match the creative concept of Cocoon, which is perhaps why they were unable to keep up with their modern club format.…

Mackie DLM Speakers: A Report from Seattle

When most of us think of Seattle we think of great coffee, endless rain storms, and of course the birthplace of grunge rock. For someone who has never been to Seattle before, I was expecting a fresh brewed cup of rain with Soundgarden playing in the background. While baggage claim did provide the Superunknown soundtrack I had always wanted, the real purpose of this trip was to witness the announcement of Mackie’s newest line of portable PA speakers. The DLM Series of powered loudspeakers are the second big announcement from Mackie this year following on the heels of their new iPad controlled mixing console the DL1608. Both products were on full display at the Barboza club in downtown Seattle where John Boudreau, Vice President of the Mackie Brand Group, unveiled the speakers, gave a rundown of their features, and let the whole room full of dealers, distributors, and the press …
