Controllerist – Breaking the Mold – Part 2

There are a few different schools of thought that exist these days in the DJ universe when it comes to using a DJ controller.  I touched on some of these in Part 1 from my own point of view and personal experiences having made the switch just less than 2 years ago.  The debate over the use of a DJ controller versus using either turntables with vinyl, CDJs with CDs, or a DVS has provoked much thought and discussion over the past few years, but continues to gather momentum as controllers evolve and become more prominent among touring professional DJs.

To be fair, the founding father of controllerism, Moldover, is considered to be more of a pure controllerist rather than a DJ.  He created the art form, based on the need to perform and live produce as a musician, going far beyond the expectations of conventional DJing through the …

Controllerist – Breaking the Mold – Part 1

It is amazing, but not surprising, the reaction I get when people see me using a controller.  Even with the world wide popularity of EDM and DJing, as well as the countless varieties of related products that are on the market, there is still a lot of mystery surrounding what DJs do when we play music.  However, it is not surprising because, being a DJ for over 2 decades, I have seen this same reaction before when just using turntables and a mixer.  It’s the DJ circle of life, seriously.  I am often asked which is better, turntables or controllers?

As I travel abroad in my journeys playing dance music, I find myself being an ambassador of the culture that we all know and love. I am always happy to talk about music, gigs, incredible DJs, EDM artists, mixing tricks, and techniques. Inevitably the conversation always turns to talking about …

Akai and Exploded Drawing – SXSW

SXSW in Austin, Texas brings together arguably the hottest indie talent from all over the world to the center of the live music universe for a couple of weeks with incredible showcases, networking, and partying.  All genres of music are pretty much represented, even electronic producers and remixers.  One such event we covered was Exploded Drawing XIII at The Volstead on Thursday, March 15th during the festival.  Exploded Drawing is a semi-monthly event in Austin hosted by Butcher Bear & soundfounder with Visuals curated by Nait Ntropy. It’s aim is to encourage creativity and stimulate conversation in the electronic music community of Texas. Each session consists of 6 twenty minute sets by six different beat makers, sound collectors, and electronic composers. The one rule is that performers are only allowed to play their own work during their set. No DJ sets allowed.

The essence of making beats and remix production …

Reloop Beatmix Announced

Direct from Musikmesse in Frankfurt, Reloop announced their newest prime time controller, the Beatmix.  This is a hot new 2-channel Virtual DJ controller coming with a version specifically for the Beatmix.  It boasts shiny new, ultra flat, 14cm aluminum jog wheels, designed for deadly scratching and quick browsing of tracks.  The large transport section is clean and minimal and the (3) Hot Cue panel allows triggering and remixing whilst having a double functionality via a shift layer for all control elements.

The effects and looping sections are also grouped very nicely above the large platters making it very easy to loop and tweak with ease with dedicated knobs for loop size, effect parameter, select, and filter.  There are also dedicated buttons in this area for auto loop, FX on, and the super cool Beat Mash.

Beat Mash closely emulates the popular Beatmasher effect in Traktor Pro, allowing you to chop and glitch out …

Numark 4Trak Review

Numark is back, this time with the release of their new dedicated Traktor 2 controller, the 4Trak.  I have always been forthcoming in admitting that I am an avid Native Instruments Traktor Scratch Pro fan, and that I am also a Kontrol S4 user.  We at Unique Squared also recognize that Traktor is one of the most widely used DJ software worldwide, hence our mapping segments with the M-Audio Torque Xponent and the ever popular Numark NS6.  We were super excited to see that Numark was releasing the 4Trak when we first saw it at Winter Namm earlier this January. Well, we finally appropriated a demo unit here at the Unique Squared studios just last week and got an opportunity to check it out.

For decades Numark has been delivering some of the best DJ products to hungry, perspective DJs as well as professional DJs worldwide.  But it has …
