Julio Bashmore’s Battle For Middle You

While we would all like to be known as truly original, we all know that we have to start some place familiar.  A drummer learns basic rudiments in order to get their sticking down, but when they practice composed piece they usually learn something that has been played before.  Once they learn a “learned” piece, they can take bits and pieces from it in order to improvise and create their own piece.  Producers seem to learn the same way.  I doubt there is an Ableton user out there who has not had the luxury or learning from a live tutorial on YouTube.

All it takes is one experienced person to break down a song, and the rest of the world can also learn how it is made.  This monkey see, monkey do learning process is key to becoming original.  Strange as it sounds, creativity cannot exist on its own without …

6 Bad Habits Most Musicians are Guilty Of

Every artist, no matter how disciplined they think they are, are capable of getting caught in some bad habits of music making.  Let’s say that you already have some music made and are now ready to take it to the real world.  Without some sort of solid plan on what you intend to do, you are simply throwing punches hoping that they will make contact.  There needs to be a plan of action that is followed through to completion.  Although we have computers to aid us in music creation as well as music distribution – there are no shortcuts in this game.  Some of the oldest ways of pitching your plan are still the best; face to face.

This type of change in music culture is taking place at the top level – at the lower levels there is much more to the business than clubs and gigs.  Open up …

Hands-on Electronic Music Theory!

Any sort of art can be broken down into fundamental skills and rudimentary skills – but this doesn’t mean that the theory needs to be learned to do something well in practice.  Take a look at visual artists; many of them come from zero schooling background.  Many have simply learned by watching other artists and critiquing their own work.  Learning by example is not a bad method of learning anything, especially art – but it does pay to have a better understanding of what you’re actually doing.  Many tend to think of schooling as something that is tiring and repetitive, and it can be, but paying your dues in this way can only help you out in the future.

Producers and DJs usually have a good ear for music.  They can understand that even when two songs match rhythmically, and they may not always sound good together.  Sometime instruments in …

Grimes Speaks Out

As technology grows and becomes accessible to more people around the world, it being us closer together – but not in every sense of that meaning.  Just because we are literally connected to more people around the world, it doesn’t mean that our perceptions of each other have changed much.  There is still racism and bigotry in any part of the world, and naturally this will cause changes that many are not prepared for.  Music is one form of art that stretches worldwide, and luckily it is also a form of art that can be branched out to various places across the globe.  Just look at the way music is created today and it is easy to see why music from the opposite side of the globe can reach the United States in no time at all.

Producers like Skrillex and PSY created their own music and their own “brand” …
