Numark Orbit Review

One of the first things we saw at the NAMM show 2013 was the Numark Orbit wireless DJ controller. There was a lot of buzz from the early press day on through the week about Numark’s latest DJ controller. After the initial high wore off, many bloggers and gear heads began to wonder whether or not the Numark Orbit could be used in a performance environment and be used well. Well we took it for a test drive to see if it has performance potential and we found that it actually holds up pretty well. Many DJs may scoff at that sentiment, but we found it to be quite fun and had several folks around the office, who weren’t DJs, playing with it, sounding great doing it, and having a lot of fun. We also had more skilled DJs pick it up and see the potential for dynamic MIDI mapping …

Numark Mixtrack Pro 2 Review

There’s no denying that Numark are at the forefront of the affordable/entry-level DJ controller market. Their Mixtrack series of controllers sparked many other companies to follow suit with their own designs to reach a mass market. While the Numark Mixtrack Pro 2 may not have all the features and cachet of the more popular, expensive, and professional DJ controllers, it does have a solid build quality, all the functionality you need to hone your craft, and it’s gig ready.

There are some great features on the Numark Mixtrack Pro 2, but there are also some limiting attributes which make it best suited for a particular DJ.

Construction

The overall build quality of the Mixtrack Pro 2 is plastic. The knobs, faders, platters (except for the brushed metal Numark logo), and buttons all have the same hard plastic feel from the first generation Numark Mixtrack Pro. The one exception are the MPC

NAMM 2013: DJ Controller Review

NAMM 2011 and 2012 saw the unveiling of a whole host of DJ controllers from some of the top manufacturers including Pioneer, Numark, Denon, Vestax, and even the illusive Native Instruments unveiled their Kontrol F1 at an off site location in 2012. NAMM is also the place where a lot of companies allow the public to play on their new designs in an almost faux test market to see how people react and then subsequently make a few last minute adjustments. NAMM 2013 was no exception in this regard but Numark was really the only company unveiling a high performance controller with the Numark NS7 2. Nearly every other DJ controller manufacturer was unveiling low cost, portable, and lets face it, entry level controllers this year. This may have come as a surprise to most of you expecting to see the latest and greatest improvements to the DJ …

NAMM 2013 – Media Preview Day

Another year, another NAMM, and we’re back at it. Today was the Media Preview Day. If you don’t know what that means- today is the day to get the first scoop on products at the show, and also a great day to go ahead and get through the whole “hey, bro, where’s my badge at?” situation. Currently, my badge is secured,  and I have been and seen a few things worth mentioning.

My first stop was to meet up with Ben from Dubreq, who announced their new Stylophone S2 with a cool video from Brett Domino recently. We got to talk to Ben a bit about how he and his father (who designed the original) came to realize they needed to release this all analog, British powerhouse into the world. Having gotten my hands on one, I can self-assuredly say I am getting the hell out of one ASAP.

Meanwhile, …

Akai MAX 49 Keyboard Controller Overview

inMusic, the parent company that owns Numark, Alesis, and Akai, has been pretty busy this year. All three of their leading companies have been releasing much of the gear featured at Winter NAMM 2012 and teased through YouTube videos and company press releases. Gear like the Numark 4TRAK, the Alesis QX line of MIDI keyboard controllers, and the very popular Akai Synthstation 49 and MPC Renaissance. In addition to releasing tons of new gear this year they also acquired formerly AVID owned M-Audio to round out their line of professional audio equipment. We will likely see more from inMusic this year at Winter NAMM 2013 in January and we will have plenty to report from the show room floor.

We first saw the Akai MAX 49 almost a year ago at Winter NAMM 2012 and our first impression was that the MAX 49 was a collection of improvements …
