kubxlab Earshots Portable Speakers

Portable speakers are still a long way from being taken seriously by any professional musician.  What you lack in size, you gain in portability – but you also lose the amount or quality of sound that can be created.  Earbuds tend to work well since they do not need much sound to become focused in one area – but if you were to try to use them as speakers they would fail horribly.  They simply do not have the right dimensions to give off decent sound.  This will not stop people from trying them out though, and some companies have put some creative thought into making them much more appealing.

One such company, Kubxlab, has created the earshots – which takes the idea of an earbud and allows them to be used as portable speakers as well.  These can be inserted into a mini boombox for use as a public …

Pasce Minirig Portable Subwoofer

With the technology that goes into smart phones, it is hard to find a fault in them.  After all, they are capable of replacing many gadgets that used to require a purse or backpack to fill.  The cameras that they come with now are extremely tiny, and much different from that of an old 1 megapixel camera that was the size of a small brick.  Even as a video player, they can deliver high quality video in such a small area using a wireless connection.  With ports from anything from speakers to USB cables, it is hard to find something that a phone today cannot do well.

I think there is one fault that we can all agree on, and that is sound.  Sure, every smartphone out there can play much through its speakers – but unlike the rest of the technology that has been shrunken down, speakers cannot.  To …

9 Portable Speakers That Don’t Suck

Have you ever seen those infomercials for products that appear on your television when you have just come back from a night of drinking?  Some of these are beyond ridiculous, but you can’t help but watch them just for the entertainment value of it.  Some of the worst ones out there are ideas that are far from original.  I mean, I’ve seen some dumb ones – but at least they have tried to improve an item that solves a problem.  The worst are the ones that try to sell you something that are no different from the rest – yet they try to pass it off as one of a kind.  Portable speakers are a good example.

Most of us already know that any type of sound that we hear from a portable speaker is going to suck.  If it is ultra portable, and fits in your pocket, then you …

10 Busking Tips

Depending on where you live, you may be able to find street performers trying to serenade and woo pedestrians for some hard earned cash here and there.  Maybe you’ve modestly given them a few dollars or two when you discovered that, wow, they actually have some talent.  Of course, there are just as many street performers without raw talent who need a serious lesson about the real world and how it works.  Many of these performers, called buskers, make a living this way and have gone on to become discovered.  Some of them now have professional careers which started from the streets of a beach city.

Busking is not as straightforward as you might guess, and there are hurtle to tackle before you even drag your gear out onto the streets.  For a DJ who wants to perform it can be even more difficult.  You will need a power source …

Bowers & Wilkins Z2 iPod/iPhone Dock

Would any sensible buyer in their right mind spend a large chunk of cash on an iPhone speaker?  I’m not talking about those cheap twenty dollar portable speakers, I’m talking about those bedside docking stations where your iPhone charges.  You’ve seen them right – those oversized alarm clocks with towering speakers?  This is pretty much what I thought of them until I actually saw one put to good use.  It was a DJ friend of mine who had enabled them to receive wireless audio.  With that, he could DJ in his bedroom and the audio would be transmitted to any part of the house the speaker was rested.  It was a pretty cool deal.

The question is, how much is something like this worth?  Unfortunately, these units aren’t built cheap, even though they look relatively basic in design.  If Apple were to make a large one, it would cost nearly …
