Native Instruments Kontrol F1 – First Look

We were expecting the Kontrol F1 sometime in the next week so it was completely unexpected that someone with one would show up unannounced. By the time I had arrived in the office, I found the team frantically skirting around the room setting up the set.  I had been planning on doing an F1 demo when the unit was released and had only began to plan something out in the days prior to our unexpected visit and was unprepared to demo the unit on a whim.  I made a call to one of my friends that produces tracks with me and asked if he would send the stems from our latest track for a demo.

At about 11 o’Clock the artist made his way back to the video room carrying with him a suitcase full of just about any piece of NI gear you can imagine.  His name was Phillip and …

Korg Kaossilator 2 and Mini KP2 Review

We have just received the Kaossilator 2 and the Mini KP2 and we are stoked to get our hands on them.  Korg first introduced the Kaoss Pad in 1999 and it was a one-of-a-kind touch pad effects unit that took the world by storm.

I remember the first time I used the original Kaoss Pad during a gig many years ago; it was a lot of fun to use because it had a lot of cool effects and it was really the first FX touch pad that I had ever seen.  I could plug a mic into it as well and do cool vocal effects whenever I performed in a live PA environment.  I also remember watching a guitarist run a Kaoss Pad inline with his guitar pedals, using the pad FX with his bare foot while he played.  It was really versatile and super fun to see.

Korg has …

Vestax VCI-380 – Serato ITCH DJ Controller Review

Since the beginning of DJing and DJ culture Vestax has been heavily influential in evolution of the art form.  With the advent of turntablism and controllerism they have consistently had a presence with products like the PMC series battle mixers, PDX series turntables, and the VCI range of controllers.  A host of incredible DJs and turntablists, including Q*Bert, Carl Cox, DJ Krush, Johnny Fiasco, and Rafik, have endorsed their products for years, choosing the Vestax range of mixers, turntables, and controllers as their weapons of choice.  The quality and reliability of the Vestax product is undeniable, and their technologically advanced design and versatility is maintained in their new range of midi pad and DJ controllers.

One of the influencers of modern controllerism, Ean Golden, first used a Vestax VCI-100 to originate a culture and a style that is more widely used among many of …

Hercules DJ Control AIR Review

A few days ago Hercules stopped by the office to drop off a 4-MX and DJ Control AIR for us to review. The Hercules DJ Control AIR is a two deck DJ controller which stands for “Adjustment by InfraRed”. It retails for under $200, so aspiring DJs can pick one up and try it out without breaking the bank. At first, the AIR struck me as a DJ’s toy but I got to put my hands on it for a few days and dive in deep. When I came out on the other side, what I found was a controller that was actually quite delightful to play (with) and a knowledge of a DJ software that, until doing this review, I had no idea even existed.

Our resident DJ specialist, DJ MadfFlip, wrote up a summary of its performance to present to us at a pre-production meeting. Scott came with pretty …
