Mid-Range DJ Controllers

Which controller should I get?  This is the question of the year for me and believe me, I like to answer it.  There are so, so many to choose from these days and we always do our best to bring you all up to speed whenever we get them in.  However, we have found doing “side by side” comparisons on the ones that are not only the newest, but the ones that are similar in price, feature set, and size make for a pretty good blog and video.  We have received a good response when we have done them in the past so it’s certainly time that we do another one.  This go round we have chosen four of the newer controllers in the mid-range priced between $500-$600.  Here are the players.

5 Things to Try on Your DJ Controller

DJ Controllers

Congratulations, if you’re reading this then you either own a controller, plan on owning a controller or just got a new controller and you want to learn some new tricks to take your game to the next level. Its time to enter the world of controllerism DJing, lets get it on!

Controllerism is something that is still fairly new, unexplored and underexploited by the DJing community. Some old school DJs see the controllerist as one that hits a button to sync their music and possesses little to know practical Djing skills (beat matching, beat-juggling, scratching, etc) but what they fail to realise is that the controllerist is on the verge of taking over and soon tables will be a thing of the past. Controllerism retools the way a DJ can think about their music because with the additional features of a controller one has unprecedented access to rip a song… Read the rest

NI Traktor Kontrol S2 Review

Oh, my what a difference a year makes for Native Instruments.  Almost a year ago we were all introduced to arguably the most anticipated Traktor dj controller to date, the Kontrol S4.  It combined Traktor Scratch, the X1, and dare I say Maschine (construction wise) into one complete package and made many djs, including myself, cheat on their turntables.  I officially made the switch by Thanksgiving after reconciling with my turntables.  Native Instruments will further tempt the purists by releasing it’s latest offering, the Kontrol S2.  We dropped some quick Hors d’oeuvres on you last month about the S2, and now we are lucky enough to have received an advance unit sent to our studios for a test drive.

Numark-IDJ-Live

When I first saw the Numark iDJ Live at Winter NAMM earlier this year it took every ounce of my Kung Fu to give it any serious consideration.  How could Numark release such a novelty item after having recently released some of the most technologically advanced DJ gear in the past year?  Well, I have to say after having an opportunity to demo it here in our studio that I am very impressed.  It was very easy to set-up, had a very clean lay out, and most of all it was a lot of fun to use.

The iDJ Live is a DJ controller that you use with the Algoriddim DJ application on your iPad, iPod Touch, or iPhone utilizing tracks from your iTunes library.  You have a slick layout complete with rotating turntables, transport section with cue and sync, pitch bend, channel faders, cross-fader, and… Read the rest

5 Reasons Why You Should Use Kontrol S4 With Turntables

I recently had the pleasure of using my Kontrol S4 in tandem with Traktor Scratch Pro 2 with turntables for an awesome gig at Halo Lounge in Atlanta.  Here’s my list of why it was so awesome.

1. Easy to hook up

No need for additional gear or accessories.  You would normally require an Audio 8 or Audio 10 interface, and multi-core cables or additional RCA cables in order to use Traktor Scratch Pro.  Simply plug both turntables directly into inputs C and D and you are ready for action.  No sweat.

2. Flexible input options

You can select which decks or sample decks the turntables will control by going into Preferences, then Input Routing.  Here you can select either turntable for decks A through D, track play or sample play.  Brilliant.

3. Easy to switch back

Use the drop down tab on deck A or B… Read the rest
