Moog Factory Tour: Slim Phatty, Little Phatty, and Moog Guitar

The next part in our Moog Factory Tour series takes us behind the scenes into the craftsmanship and history behind the popular Moog Slim Phatty and Moog Little Phatty monophonic, analog synthesizers. Jim also walks us through the history behind the innovative Moog Guitar and talks about why it is so different from a traditional guitar and electric stringed instruments. The point that Jim and Moog Music Inc. want to drive home is that they are crafting their instruments in the same ways they always have. They keep the construction of their instruments in house and continue to use analog signal paths in an era when many companies are moving towards digital. This should be no surprise to those loyal Moog customers, but it’s still great to hear that Moog Music Inc. is staying true to the legacy that their founder Bob Moog left behind.

While we have been using these posts to …

Moog Factory Tour: Etherwave Theremin

In this part of our Moog Factory Tour series, Jim Debardi explores the history of the theremin and its relation to Moog Music Inc. The theremin is not only the oldest electronic instrument, but it’s also the instrument that laid the groundwork for Bob Moog’s legacy with electronic instruments and synthesizers. Be sure to check out our Moog Factory Tour Introduction and be on the lookout for the remaining parts of this series.

Just like in our last post, we will use this post to give you the latest news from Moog Music Inc. On the heels of the release of the Animoog V2 iPad App comes the incorporation of the Grateful Dead Expansion Pack. This pack takes the sounds from the Grateful Dead’s Feb. 14th 1968 performance at the Carousel Ballroom and turns it into a pack that features 82 presets and 45 timbres for use within the …

Moog Factory Tour: An Introduction

While at Moogfest 2012 we were fortunate enough to have Orbital and Chad Hugo demo the sounds they created for the new all white Moog Slim Phatty. We also got an exclusive demonstration of using control voltage with the Moog Minitaur and a selection of Moogerfooger pedals. Even after the amazing shows at Moogfest we still wanted more Moog so we asked Jim Debardi to take us on a tour of the Moog Factory to show us how they make their instruments, the history behind Bob Moog and the factory, and a sneak peek into the new technologies they are designing.

In our introductory video Jim gives us a brief history of Bob Moog while also providing some infromation as to how the inner workings of the factory function. All Moog products are hand made (with the exception of the t-shirts, hats, and knick-knacks we couldn’t leave Asheville without) …

Chad Hugo and the Moog Slim Phatty

Chad Hugo, along with co-producer Pharrell Williams, are easily considered among the most successful producers of all time and especially within the last few decades. Blending their own musical influences with eastern sounds and a knack for pop sensibility, Hugo along with Williams have been instrumental in crafting such mega hits as “I’m a Slave 4 U” (Britney Spears), “Hot in Herre” (Nelly), and “U Don’t Have to Call” (Usher). While most of you may be familiar with Chad Hugo as one half of super producers The Neptunes and member of the group N.E.R.D., others of you may be familiar with his current DJ duo called Missile Command which includes Daniel Biltmore. What you may not know yet about Chad Hugo is that he was asked by Moog to make sounds for their new all white re-issued Slim Phatty analog synthesizers.

Hugo pulls influences from his youth in Virginia Beach to his professional work …

Moogfest 2012- What We Saw

So, as it does, Moogfest 2012 has come and gone. Among the many treats that come with a trip to Asheville, N.C., and visits to the Moog Factory, we also got to catch a number of shows. Rather than telling you about all the great content we have coming from our time at the factory with artists like Orbital, Chad Hugo, and all the other goodies, today I am going to talk about the shows I got to catch in between running around from shoot to shoot.

Primus 3d

Full disclosure, we were a bit late getting into town and sorting out all our credentials, so the first show we really managed to make it in for was the highly anticipated Primus 3D. Primus, as many know, is a well loved band that is fronted by the enigmatic Les Claypool. Claypool is eccentric, visionary, and very accomplished as a bass …
