NAMM 2014 | JBL EON 615

The JBL EON series of portable PA speakers are some of the best around. The series has been very successful at combining a level of quality synonymous with one of the oldest loudspeaker companies, and a price point that suits a portable PA system. This year at NAMM 2014 JBL showed us the latest iteration of the EON series with the EON 600. We got a chance to check out the EON 615 which features the latest waveguide technology in the horn from JBL’s other speakers and studio monitors. The woofer has what JBL are calling “pattern control aperture” which helps to keep the speaker sounding great over a wide dynamic range and with even dispersion.

On the back you have volume control and two XLR inputs as well as a thru output. On the back you also have presets depending on the demands you have for the EON 615 …

JBL Hearing the Truth: History

We showed you guys a trailer last month for our JBL Hearing the Truth series. This is our first part in the series appropriately titled “History.” JBL Professional veteran Mark Gander walks us through the legacy of founder James B. Lansing’s historic trek as the iconic designer and manufacturer for loudspeaker systems across nearly every media industry around the world. Mark also discusses the evolution of loudspeaker design from the early 1900s all the way to today’s professional loudspeaker technology. This is a great introduction for anyone looking to take a peek inside not just JBL, but how speaker technology was developed and implement throughout the last 100 years.

Mackie SRM550 Powered Loudspeaker Review

Mackie’s latest foray into the powered loudspeaker market is with their SRM Series which includes the SRM650, the SRM1850 Sub, and the focus of this review, the SRM550. Mackie says they are “built like a tank,” and I can tell you with certainty that these speakers are definitely built for the road. While they carry all the power to withstand even the most abusive touring artist, they are quite light at 37 lbs., which makes them an easy carry for even the laziest member of your crew. Mackie has got the build quality to compete with other speakers in it’s price range, but how does it sound and what feature sets make it worth your hard earned cash?

First lets talk about the sound quality. On board you have a 12” high-output LF driver and a 1.4” titanium dome compression driver. Titanium compression drivers have become the standard for a lot …

Bose L1 System and PowerKompany

Portable PA systems have evolved tremendously over the years. With speaker system technology advancing so rapidly, we are able to have more powerful systems with much smaller designs. This is a welcomed improvement for artists like Marie Davon and her band PowerKompany. Hailing from Athens, GA and with an affinity for orchestral atmosphere, PowerKompany describe their sound as being cinematic with a pop sensibility.

While PowerKompany currently play theaters and clubs, Marie often times will play smaller and more intimate venues that might not always have a PA. For this reason, she will need to bring her own PA which will usually consist of the typical PA equipment of speakers, an amplifier, and a mixing console. In addition to being mired with cables and a tedious setup process, Marie has to get her PA equipment in and out of various venues by herself. Traditional PA equipment is heavy and awkward …

Bose L1 Portable Speaker Systems Overview

Bose is known for having some of the best sounding audio devices from headphones, to media players, to surround sound systems. To add to their existing line of quality professional audio equipment, Bose put out a collection of portable PA systems. Initially released in 2003 the L1 Speaker Systems looked to change the way we look at live sound setups. These systems have been used in multiple applications from PA for the acoustic performer to monitor systems for full bands. In 2012 Bose added a new product to the line with the L1 Model 1S and its companion bass speaker the B1 Bass Module. The L1 Portable Systems can also be used for any type of performance or live sound application from a mobile DJ to an orator. Not only do these speakers have great sound but they are also aesthetically pleasing for use as an audio source/entertainment hub for your home or business. There are …
