Lighting, or perhaps good lighting, is an art form that is probably more mysterious than DJing itself. The DJ is actually a very noticeable part of the room. They are there to attract your attention, and they emit a sort of energy that can be infectious throughout the crowd. However, if the DJ was put into a hospital room or a dugout at a baseball game, the effect would not be the same at all. There is a certain type of ambiance that comes from the right type of backdrop and the right scenery in a room – and this is the job for the guys who control the light.
Light can be very deceiving if used the right way – just take a look at the way lighting is used in movies. It is used to trick the brain into thinking of an emotion, even though it may be …

Lighting itself is somewhere between an art and a science. If you take a basic photography class or tv/film class, you learn basic ideas like three point lighting. In easy terms, you want the light to be focused on your subject – but not enough that it overexposes them to the light. At the same time you need a bit of light for your camera, but not directly into your eyes as to glare the picture. This is where the creativity comes in. Music is just one sliver of the art world, and only makes use of one of our human senses. Sure we can touch and see our instruments and find ways to interact with music – but the end result makes use of our ability to hear, above all else. You cannot talk about art in general, without considering the visual side of things. After all, whenever we attend a concert or a movie it is the combination of the visual and the sound that really melds everything together. Pitchfork, whose focus has always been centered on music, is finally bridging the gap by creating what they call “Nothing Major”.
Nothing major will break out of the shell of music alone, and will explore ideas and artists who are creating works of art on the visual side of things. They will observe innovations and innovators in the field of visual arts, …
