When you ask drummers, “Which brand has the best electronic drum kit?”, the typical answer is Roland. However Roland V-Drums are rather expensive even if you are getting what you are paying for in terms of build quality, performance, and overall fidelity. Roland has delivered a kit that is not only affordable, but also makes portability a staple feature on the new Roland TD-4KP V-Drums Portable electronic drum kit. Following in the footsteps of previous models within the TD-4K line, the TD-4KP retails for under $1000 with all the quality you can expect from a Roland V-Drum kit. Included in the kit are the TD-4 drum module, eight pads total (kick, snare, toms x3, hi-hat, crash and ride cymbals), the FD-8 Hi-Hat Controller, and drum rack for mounting your drum and cymbal pads. Not included are a drum throne and kick pedal but you can purchase the Roland DAP-3X V-Drums Accessory Package which …

The Apogee Quartet is a 4 in and 6 out audio interface built specifically for Mac computers and even works on your iOS devices like your iPad and iPhone. While the Quartet does have a large price tag, you are getting a lot of features that go beyond just a standard audio interface. Instead of just showing you all the Quartet has to offer, we decided to take it to Parhelion studios, put it in the hands of avid Apogee user Miles Walker, and give it a test drive. He not only takes us through the features in the video but also demos the sound of the mic preamps as well as the iOS connectivity.
Miles Walker is a music producer and engineer based out of Atlanta, GA. His work can be heard on the records for mega hit makers like Beyonce, Katy Perry, and Wiz Khalifa. If you want to …

Forums, news feeds, social media networks, and email in boxes lit up Monday with the announcement from Native Instruments that their immensely popular Komplete software instrument suite will be getting an update from version 8 to the new version 9. This comes nearly two years after the Komplete 8 update which came out in the late summer of 2011. The official release of Komplete 9 is March 27th but we now know what instruments and effects will be included in the update which you can read in detail here.
The big question for most of us is: Should we bother upgrading? Are we going to be getting anything worthwhile out of this update? While reading these forums, blogs, and social media posts, I began to notice that there was a lot of disdain mixed with “yeah whatever” when it comes to this release, and rightfully so. Many of the instruments and effects that are …

It’s very rare for digital recording bundles to come packaged with three pieces of gear that are of a good quality and reasonably priced. Typically the included microphone or headphones are sub par at best while the interface is around the quality you expect given it’s price. The Focusrite Scarlett Studio package looks to break that mold by offering three quality pieces of gear into a recording bundle that is priced well below the normal studio package. While the Scarlett Studio package may not be the be all end all solution to your recording needs, it does have everything you need to get a solid recording without breaking the bank.
Here are some details and specifications on each piece of equipment that comes in the Focusrite Scarlett Studio package.
Scarlett 2i2 Interface
In light of the recent Dave Grohl directed Sound City documentary, its worth mentioning that Focusrite was founded in 1985 …

If you read much about the Arturia MiniBrute in synth forums, you’ll be hard pressed to find anyone outside of the most absurdly elitist of synth snobs saying anything bad about it. While it is their first foray into proper analog hardware, Arturia have brought into the world a tough little synth with features not often aligned with the price point of the MiniBrute. They have been hard to get ahold of, but I finally picked up one during the brief second we had them in stock.
One of the nicer features that I don’t really touch on during this brief overview video is the aftertouch. While I mention it in passing, I don’t go on and on about just how rad aftertouch on an affordable analog synth is. So let me do it here: OMG YOU GUYS!!!! AFTERTOUCH!!!!
That said, it really is quite a nice option to have …
