Summerfest Sessions: Whiskey of the Damned

Hailing from Milwaukee, WI, Whiskey of the Damned bring an eclectic mix of old Irish Celtic music with a punk influence. Frontman Eoin McCarthy, percussionist Jay Wolf, and bass player Matt Schuetz all double as sound engineers and stage workers when they aren’t performing their brand of alternative folk. With so many influences it’s difficult to lock these guys down into a particular genre but however you describe their sound, it’s clear they like playing music and working with other musicians when they are not performing themselves. These three members of Whiskey of the Damned were running their own stage at Summerfest which had seventy plus artists performing. While it may have been a smaller and more down to earth stage when compared to the bloated arena style stages, it was actually the best place to be during the day with a nice cool breeze coming off of Lake Michigan.…

Summerfest Sessions: Alexa Carter

Touring with Staind frontman Aaron Lewis and slated to head out on the road with him once again, big things are happening for singer and recording artist Alexa Carter. With the release of The Ballerina EP earlier this spring, she is headed back into the studio to record her first full length album. Without pigeonholing Alexa Carter into a particular genre, she likes to describe her sound from those artists which influence her like OneRepublic and Sara Bareilles.…

Summerfest Sessions: Vital

With an album coming out this Fall, the band Vital has already begun to make a name for themselves on the West Coast and are looking to start making headway on the East Coast. Formed by former hip hop artist Vital in San Francisco, the band also has members from North Carolina. Unhappy with the current state of popular music, Vital looks to set themselves apart from the mainstream but still bring a sound that is palatable to nearly every musical taste. Taking influences from Radiohead, Mutemath, and Coldplay, they would describe their sound as alternative if begged to do so, but the guys in Vital like to think that their music is a mixture of what every guy in the band brings to the table when recording and performing live. We were fortunate enough to have them come track an acoustic version of their song “Stupid” from the Vital …

Summerfest Sessions: Kelly Paige

Kelly Paige is a singer/songwriter based out of Nashville, TN. With a sound that she describes as soul, pop, reggae, you can hear a mixture of joyful pop sensibility layered with deeply personal lyrical composition. While Kelly generally tours and records with a band, her sound is able to stand alone with a single guitar and her voice. Her session was the first of many during the last day of Summerfest and really set the tone of that day for the Mobile Studio crew. While the lyrics of “La Ti Da,” may be layered with slight cynicism, the ultimate message was one of hope and happiness with a chord progression that put all of our minds on a tropical beach.…

Summerfest Sessions: Kink Ador

Episode two in our Mobile Studio Summerfest Sessions series brings us the Nashville based band Kink Ador. Although they are based in a town that is traditionally seen as a hub for country music, Kink Ador can be described as a rock band with an indie/alternative and often punk flair. Their sound harkens back to bands like Blondie and could even be compared to the more contemporary Yeah Yeah Yeahs. While their sound may be fun and energetic, their message is deeply thought provoking with questions about the current state of rock and roll and a proclamation to the world that we need to start living our lives to their fullest potential. The singer/bass player Sharon, guitar player Nick, and drummer Pearce all bring a sense of humor and humility to their philosophical underpinnings whether that be in their music or during the short interview we had together.…
