Drumcell Interview: Thoughts on Traktor

With the release of Traktor Pro 2.6 earlier this year, many DJ’s are beginning to take advantage of the new remix deck functionality, better BPM detection, and the new flux mode and macro FX selections. In addition the new hardware  from Native Instruments like the Traktor Kontrol F1 and their first forray into mixers with the Traktor Kontrol Z2, help to make these new features in the Traktor update even more useful. The techno DJ and Traktor specialist Drumcell is not just a former spokesman for the DJ software, but he is an active user of the software and uses it at every gig.

When we interviewed Drumcell he was performing with two laptops: one to use with Traktor and utilizing 4 decks, and the other with Ableton where he was launching clips with Native Instruments Maschine. He noted that in the very near future he will be integrating …

Drumcell Interview: An Introduction to a Techno DJ

Some of you may be familiar with Moe Espinosa whether that be during his tenure with Native Instruments as a product representative and Traktor clinician, or as a Techno DJ performing around the world. For those of you unfamiliar with Moe he goes by the moniker Drumcell and is the founder of Droid Recordings and co-founder of Droid Behavior. Drumcell with the help of his partners have worked to place Droid Behavior at the center of the West Coast techno scene. If you are a techno fan, you should really check out their website as it is littered with artist biographies, streaming music, as well as a blog and podcast. In the age of Soundcloud, Spotify, Pandora, and other avenues of disposable music, its quite endearing to see the folks at Droid Behavior doing more than hosting live mixes and new tracks, but also actively talking about the music and the culture surrounding it.

Drumcell is …

Top 7 Rave Era Break Beat Tracks

I discovered raves and techno music back in 1991 when I was living in Orlando, Florida.  Nightclubs like AAHZ at the Beachem Theatre and The Edge provided my introduction into the DJ scene.  My love affair continued in 1992 when I moved to Virginia where the music scene thrived in close by Washington D.C. and Baltimore.  Back then we were fans of all of the music and really didn’t care about classifying different styles or genres.  We were very fortunate that the promoters booked very diverse DJs and Live acts, therefore giving us the exposure to many different types of music styles.  I loved it all, but being from Florida and having b-boy roots made it very easy for me to gravitate toward the breaks.  It was a good time for it, because so much was being produced in Florida, California, Baltimore, and even Texas.  The U.K. was even killing …

10 Tracks That Changed The Face Of Dance Music

It’s safe to say that modern dance music is very diverse these days. There are many great tracks released every week that DJs are quick to discover and download so that they can keep their sets fresh and their dance floor moving. No matter what style of music one plays it’s often times a rigorous labor of love to to listen and review each new track to determine which ones will make the cut. I really don’t complain too much about the process because I love it, and it’s much easier these days with the “interweb” at our fingertips to simplify the whole process.

Oh, how times have changed. I remember hearing Scott Henry play his coveted set closing record and having to make my way up to the booth to train spot it, only to see that it was a white label. Then, if I was lucky, I would …

Korg Kaoss Pad Quad. Yes, Please!

I love dance music.  I am just as much a fan of watching it performed live as I am doing it myself.  If you have ever watched a DJ or Live PA act perform it to a huge crowd, you know that every breakdown, build and beat drop invokes mass hysteria, hands in the air, bodies moving, etc.  You all know what I mean.  We had the opportunity to create these amazing effects using the Korg Kaoss Pad Quad.

Korg introduced the first Kaoss Pad in 1999 and has since put out the KP2, KPE1 Entrancer, KP3, Kaossilator, mini-KP, and now the KP Quad.  Like it’s predecessors it utilizes an X/Y axis on a touch-pad to modulate the selected effect.  The Quad uses 20 modern effects between laid out quite nicely between 4 banks, giving you the ability to use 4 at once.  The buttons responded well and the 2 …
