Music festivals and other trade shows are more of a cultural event than a business presentation. Sure, there are companies vying for your attention and your hard earned money. Sure, there will be booths everywhere you step trying to sell you something that is completely discretionary. But this is what we ultimately want. We don’t attend these events because we need another keyboard a MIDI controller, we go because we want to be entertained at the thought of having something novel and ground breaking. We go because we want to be the first to lay our hands on a product that has never seen production.

Aside from the typical new product offerings and prototypes shown off at DJ equipment trade shows, the bigger picture that we get from these events is the sense of where things are headed in the industry. After all, a company can produce equipment all they want, but it’s the DJ who ultimately decides what’s worth having and what missed the pitch completely.
For once, iPads are no longer just a fun toy in the DJ industry – they are beginning to be taken seriously. Controllers have reached their limits in technology and there will be no more monumental leaps forward as it is. Some are things you have been drooling over for months and some have yet to be announced. The coverage at NAMM Show 2011 was a first for UniqueSquared. There were so many products that we wanted to show you guys but we had to pick and choose those that really stood out on the show floor. January signifies the beginning of the calendar year and, for those in the Musical Instrument Industry, the time for the NAMM Show. Around this time of the month, manufacturers and retailers alike start to run specials with terms like “NAMM Show Specials” or “New at NAMM.”
Some may wonder, “what is the NAMM Show?” and might remember that it’s “a Trade-show thingy or something.” To those that asked the question, it is a “Trade-show thingy” and it is something. The NAMM Show is a big deal to retailers and music manufacturers and means little to everyone else, but what comes out of it is cool for everyone.
