OVER THINKING YOUR DJ SETS

The level of creativity that we are given with any modern music mixing tool is only limited by what we can imagine.  Now, that sounds over our heads and grandiose since it is actually difficult to create new creative ways to mix music but the possibility is always there.  Some will see this as an unlimited tool box that allows us to create music beyond anything that has been created before, but some will also see it as a detriment to our own perception of what we are able to create.  Think about the promo and showcase DJs who masterfully put together a routine; a routine that not only combines DJ skills and technique but also production skills.  Creating a set like that goes far beyond what we define to be the job of a DJ.

Can a simple DJ still make a case for their style with the amount …

Audio Toys and Music Tech

When any sort of gear or software is introduced at a trade show for musicians, gear companies try to find ways to set their equipment apart from the rest.  This is much easier said than done since critics are good at being critics.  No matter how well built your product is, it may be called too expensive or too bulky.  If a product is cheap and fun in a small package, it will likely be called a toy or a gimmick.  The worst part about these trade shows is that the first impression is the impression that will be felt by the secondary audience who wouldn’t even dare to purchase it unless it got rave review within ten minutes.

I’m guilty of giving items the same descriptions without even using them; I judge them based on their looks and what purpose I think they were built to serve.  The Traktor …

Mobile Music for DJs

They say that mobile devices really stand to capture more attention and business than the plain laptop or desktop computer.  For a DJ this is not a guaranteed truth.  There is much that needs to be work on in terms of interface and usability, and there are hoops that need to be jumped in order for the modern DJ to really embrace the platform as something serious.  DJ programs for iPhones and tablets are common, but what it is also common is how under-performing they actually are.  At most, a DJ can get by with algoriddim’s djay for iOS, but they can never be as proficient as someone who owns a real pair of decks and a real pair of headphones.

But just because DJ software and other application aren’t going to storm the tablet and a mobile user by surprise doesn’t mean that music has no place on a …

Shiftee Rocks Traktor DJ; Freeze Mode Mastery

The decision to port Traktor to the iPad as a standalone piece of software could not have come at a better time.  We are currently saturated with ways to connect devices together, and more and more DJs want to use multiple devices with the iPad.  Simply getting your iPad to play along with more than one device can be a headache with the limited connectivity currently offered on the tablet.  It’s bad enough trying to connect an external soundcard to a mixer while making sure that the audio is routed properly, so when a table with zero connectivity is tossed in the picture, all hell breaks loose.

The Traktor app for the iPad had made it easy to manipulate music without the need for an actual controller or aftermarket device.  Of course this “software only” approach has its limitation, but Native Instruments has considered that before porting the app.  With …

Traktor DJ For iPad Review

So it has finally happened.  Traktor has bitten the bullet and decided to port their software (or at least a smaller version of it) to the iPad.  The best part about this transition is that the price of the software has remained low, which is something uncharacteristic of Native Instruments.  Since the app runs on the iPad without using any eternal devices, there is no sound card or controller that needs to be attached to use it – and it is readily meant to be used without needing any extra software side gear as well.  So how different is Traktor DJ from the full-blown version?

For one, the entire visual layout has been streamlined, meaning no countless boxes on the screen to look at and no complicated mapping features to learn.  The screen does not go with the 2 spinning records approach, but rather, the traditional grid waveforms that we …
