Controllerist – Breaking the Mold – Part 2

There are a few different schools of thought that exist these days in the DJ universe when it comes to using a DJ controller.  I touched on some of these in Part 1 from my own point of view and personal experiences having made the switch just less than 2 years ago.  The debate over the use of a DJ controller versus using either turntables with vinyl, CDJs with CDs, or a DVS has provoked much thought and discussion over the past few years, but continues to gather momentum as controllers evolve and become more prominent among touring professional DJs.

To be fair, the founding father of controllerism, Moldover, is considered to be more of a pure controllerist rather than a DJ.  He created the art form, based on the need to perform and live produce as a musician, going far beyond the expectations of conventional DJing through the …

Controllerist – Breaking the Mold – Part 1

It is amazing, but not surprising, the reaction I get when people see me using a controller.  Even with the world wide popularity of EDM and DJing, as well as the countless varieties of related products that are on the market, there is still a lot of mystery surrounding what DJs do when we play music.  However, it is not surprising because, being a DJ for over 2 decades, I have seen this same reaction before when just using turntables and a mixer.  It’s the DJ circle of life, seriously.  I am often asked which is better, turntables or controllers?

As I travel abroad in my journeys playing dance music, I find myself being an ambassador of the culture that we all know and love. I am always happy to talk about music, gigs, incredible DJs, EDM artists, mixing tricks, and techniques. Inevitably the conversation always turns to talking about …

Denon DJ SC3900 Review

Bring that funky beat back!  Denon DJ has just announced it’s soon to be award winning digital turntable media controller, the SC3900.  This is a breath of fresh air in the world of DJing amidst a growing number of all-in-one DJ controllers that have been introduced in the past 3 years.  Not to say that I don’t like controllers any more, I love them, but it has been quite some time since I truly got excited about a CD player, especially one that has a ton of very hot features at a pretty reasonable price.  The SC3900 boasts a nine-inch rotating vinyl high-torque turntable which is certain to make turntablist finger’s wet with anticipation, and compatibility with Serato Scratch Live, and Traktor, as well as it’s new “Engine” PC direct software.  You are able to mix and scratch direct from USB devices, CD’s (all media formats), laptop, …

Numark iDJ Live at Winter NAMM 2011

The iPad, as we said earlier, was the hot item at the show this year. There were so many fantastic controllers designed to integrate with it for many different uses. Numark had one of the coolest controllers in the iDJ Live.  We had loads of fun controlling Djay by algoriddim on the iPad. It truly is plug and play and it comes ready to rock with cables for  master and headphone out for monitoring the mix. We also had a first hand look at the Numark iDJ app for iPad as well.  Thanks to Felix at Numark again for showing us the goods. Check it!

Transcript:…

Scott: Alright back again at the Numark booth with Felix. We’re going to take a look at another product here. You know what? Numark is just killing it right about now, so let’s take it to felix.
Felix: Guys, are you familiar with a

Numark Mixtrack Review

This was our first video for our “Product Reviews” section of the website. This all started when we found out one of our guys who manages inventory brought in his super awesome-over-the-top camera. He told us “he takes pictures” for fun. Yeah right… so check out what we did that day in the video above.

What we liked about the Mixtrack was the it was super light weight and feature packed with Turntables and a Mixer in one controller. Pretty baller right?  We thought so. Also, it is surprisingly durable and well built for the price point. This video does a pretty good job explaining what you get with the Mixtrack in the transport section, pitch section, EQ kills section, and a nice effects section. All of these have nice backlit buttons so if you are buring the midnight oil or DJ’ing in a dark setting, this makes things easy …
