When a hometown producer becomes a big name who travels across the globe, you’d think that something about them would change. Many artists make it to the top by claiming that they will never sell out or change, but it is kind of hard to fathom that not happening with screaming fans at your fingertips. All of the hard work that went into becoming a damn near brand name, so naturally you want to celebrate, and naturally you want some of the respect that comes with the territory. So what is it like to be a single DJ on stage, performing in front of millions?
Just the thought of it can be overwhelming when you picture on man on stage with nobody else behind him. The same gear you use to DJ in your bedroom is the same gear you use when you’re in a giant stadium, so I can …

NAMM 2011 and 2012 saw the unveiling of a whole host of DJ controllers from some of the top manufacturers including Pioneer, Numark, Denon, Vestax, and even the illusive Native Instruments unveiled their Kontrol F1 at an off site location in 2012. NAMM is also the place where a lot of companies allow the public to play on their new designs in an almost faux test market to see how people react and then subsequently make a few last minute adjustments. NAMM 2013 was no exception in this regard but Numark was really the only company unveiling a high performance controller with the Numark NS7 2. Nearly every other DJ controller manufacturer was unveiling low cost, portable, and lets face it, entry level controllers this year. This may have come as a surprise to most of you expecting to see the latest and greatest improvements to the DJ …

There are plenty of easy ways to broadcast your own live show – and plenty of websites that facilitate the process; mixstream comes to mind when I think of live web shows. The problem is that you’ll need to have your own cheap webcams, audio input devices, and computers to map everything out. The result is sometimes less the desirable, with wires strung about the place and latency issues between microphone and video.
Vestax is working on the PBS-4, which hopes to be a simple all-in-one device to manage all of your peripherals. The unit has options for various devices such as VGA and HDMI video, as well as RCA and balanced audio jacks – and the ability to mix them all. Expect to see it soon.…

Native Instruments and Rane may have their share of the DVS and controller software market, but Algoriddim’s djay and vjay app is beginning to become the new king of the mobile device arena, especially with their partnership with Apple iOS. With Algoriddim’s app being the first fully certified app to run on an iOS device with dual stereo outputs, the market for small portable controllers is even greater demand now.
The Vestax Spin 2 will literally become the flagship device to between the marriage of the djay app and iOS 6’s newest updates. While isn’t the full fledge controller that you’d expect, such as the VCI-400 – it is perfectly geared for this exact setup, right out of the box.…

NAMM is not slouching on new DJ controllers. It has been a serious gatekeeping effort to make sure that we show you the ones that really made an impression on us, if for no other reason than digging into all of them and looking for new/sellable features being a time consuming process.
This was not the case with the VCI 400. Vestax have really made a flexible, infinitely mappable surface here. I actually kind of walked into it because I noticed a girl was messing with video software and thought maybe I was looking at a new VJ controller. Then when I got to ask her what she was working with, she informed me that she was not a DJ, she was a specialist with her video software package. She was, in fact, mapping on the fly to her software with the VCI-400 to demonstrate just what a flexible surface …
