Numark Orbit Unboxing & First Impressions

When a new toy comes out on the market, especially one that is affordable and somewhat better than disposable – everyone wants to grab a piece of it; they want to see how it works.  I don’t judge a product by how many advertisements for it cross my face daily, I judge them by the amount of reviews that have been gathered for it on the internet.  The Numark Orbit is just one of those controllers that everyone wants to grab a piece of.  So far, people are quite impressed by what they see.  The size of the controller is one of the key features of it – which can be held in the hand, or even by both hands like a gaming controller.  Not much bigger than a pair of dicers, portability is king with this one.

The wireless setup and wireless dongle also make it a step …

Pioneer XDJ-R1 Tutorial Series

DJs have to sort through and organize their cables and wires; there is no question about that.  The idea of avoiding wires completely in a setup is just as foreign as not having to plug your mixer into a wall.  Even if we had wireless audio, wireless power, and devices that communicated with each other, it would not be that simple.  There would still need to be transmitters and receivers attached to each other and there would most certainly need to be protocols that were able to manage the many different devices.  Wireless audio is sort of a scary idea for a DJ, since between the receiver and transmitter; there is a lot that can go wrong.

Just running the microwave and using your home phone can be a problem when interference is introduced. Now, imagine trying to transmit data from your tablet to your mixer.  You can easily see …

Pioneer XDJ-R1 Controller

The future of the internet may be very different from the internet that we know and love.  Today, we use our personal computers to access information that exists thousands of miles away – but we still need to have a decent computer and browser installed to do any of this.  If we want to open up Serato or Ableton on our computers, we have to own the program and it needs to be owned on the same computer that we are using.  In the next couple of decades, you can expect computers to be completely remote, and little data would actually need to be owned at home.  The same type of progression is happening with DJ gear.  We are eliminating all of the large parts of our “storage”.

Music can be stored on a thumb drive rather than an internal hard disk in a laptop – it can even be …

ZT Lunchbox Junior

Having wireless gear is only as pleasant as the rest of your gear that needs to be wired.  I’ve seen wireless devices, such as wireless controllers, be promoted as the next big way to DJ – but it strikes me as odd since the rest of the gear cannot be moved around in the same fashion.  Then there is also the problem of only having one hand to DJ with, if the other hand is holding the unit in the air.  Maybe they need some sort of drumline harness to mount the controller to.  Wireless would truly be revolutionary if every part of the DJ’s system was wireless.  I’m talking about wireless audio and wireless power cables as well.  I’m sure we don’t be seeing this anytime soon in the future.

Battery powered speakers that can be jacked into are cute, but they rarely output anything worth taking seriously.  The …

How Can I Use My DJ Controller Wirelessly?

Wireless devices are becoming a reality for folk who enjoy technology and audio devices.  This isn’t limited to DJ controllers either, the idea of using wireless signals to transmit audio has been around since the first FM transmitters were attached to portable CD players.  The trouble, however, has always boiled down to consistency problems and latency issues.  Take the FM transmitter that is used in your car, for example.  If you need to play songs off of your iPod without wires, it is a decent tool – but you already know that this audio will suffer from quality problems as well as clean signal issues.

For those who use their WiFi router to send audio around the house, the issue of quality as gotten slightly better, but it has not disappeared.  When a DJ needs to use wireless commands to control a DVS or another type of action, the tiny …
