Music festivals are one of the few concert events that have just about everything for everyone. You can go to the Vans Warped Tour and see your favorite punk bands of yesteryear, or a young band who finally made it to one of the smaller stages and everything in between. Lollapalooza, Coachella, and Bonnaroo have varying acts with different styles even if they are generally in the same genre of music. These are just a few of the biggest music festivals of the year and annually they accommodate tens of thousands of people.
One music festival that was completely off my radar was the three day electronic music festival Ultra. I first heard about Ultra when the UniqueSquared Mobile Studio visited Miami last year for the Winter Music Conference 2011. We were able to score some passes for the 2012 show and the team was tasked with going so we could report on Ultra. I am …

When the Mobile Studio team were first told that we were going to WMC and Ultra, we had a very different picture of how it was going to go down. At first, we assumed we would be parking the bus somewhere at WMC. However, a few of us, including myself, had never been to WMC/Ultra before and assumed that it was just at some convention center somewhere in Miami. It turned out to be in a tent, no bigger than a hockey rink, pitched next to the W Hotel on South Beach; literally a stone’s throw from the water.
We had the bus parked out front in the parking lot adjacent to the beach and hotel and began running operations as usual until the second day in which we would begin artist interviews with Liquid Todd of Sirius XM. A normal day on the Mobile Studio is opening …

Once a year, around this very time, all eyes in the pro audio / music world find themselves drawn to Frankfurt. You’re thinking it’s some kind of sausage thing, and why not? However, I am actually talking about the European equivalent of NAMM known as Musikmesse. In addition to having a rad Euro name that makes me think of the average synth goon’s noodle infested studio, Musikmesse is often regarded by those in certain quarters as the trade show where vapors become real and all the coolies trot out the next enviable piece of tech candy.
I always dream of attending it myself, but there seems to be some reason I can’t go every year. Last year, I believe I was in Germany not too long before, not too long after, but not at all during. This year, I was in Miami, watching the culmination of years of EDM erupt …

Shooting B-Roll can be a boring job sometimes but I really like the chance to get out by myself in alien cities and poke around. Things just get that much more interesting when you have a camera on your back. If you aren’t familiar with the term “B-Roll” it is defined as footage that may or may not be immediately useful but is generally collected to be used as stock footage. When we planned out our trip to Miami we planned on making several video projects and needed B-Roll to provide supplemental non diegetic content between cuts, such as a girl drinking a cocktail, people dancing, locational shots and so on. Basically I was tasked with filming things that are very “Miami Vibe” and are contextually relevant to the content of the finished video but make no sense alone when viewed alone.
Before I jump into the bulk of this …

So we just got back in from Miami after a long and eventful week at Miami’s WMC/Ultra and the week before at Austin’s South by SouthWest Music Conference. We had a great time and are home with loads of content that we are logging or converting from notes to articles.
If you’ve been keeping up at all, you have seen our ongoing coverage of “The Road to SXSW” with Ambassadors. The mix for “Habits” is coming along. I am currently sending a rough to the guys so we can pick up a tambourine track we all managed to forget on our last day tracking together, but that mix will be final and proudly shown for all in the next week. In addition, we have our live coverage of the boys from some of their shows with Lights we caught, as well as their appearances at SXSW.
