INTERVIEW WITH DJ DWELLS!

I wonder what it must be like to be a young and rising star in the DJ world.  Of course, in the world of Turntablism and battles, image is nothing.  It comes down to raw skills and this is how most of us are judged.  When a 13 year old kid does well battling against DJs who are 3 or 4 times that age – they are going to get noticed.  But one thing that separates a teen from an adult in the spotlight, is how they handle their priorities.  Dwells is a teenager like most of us once were.  He comes home and does his homework, but not before a little basketball and practice behind the wheels.

There is a stark difference between kids like this and the kids that become stars for no good reason.  See, Dwells will likely keep up in the DJ world and later on …

Gigs… At 52 Years Old?

Being a musician in general should really have nothing to do with age, but it has a lot to do with experience.  When a musician who is over 40 years old is performing at a professional level, this comes as no surprise, since most people would equate older age to having years of experience behind them.  However, when a younger musician comes up in the scene, many see this is having some sort of innate talent since they lack the number of years most of us have in the same field.  So basically, we adore the younger DJs who have made it further than what DJ did before them.

The flipside of this is the older DJs who are still in the club scene.  We’re talking about guys who are in their late 50’s and 60’s, who still find it in themselves to spin for a club audience.  I suppose …

Topspin Expands MTV Partnership

Ironically, music television is not the best place to go when you want to hear new music from the latest artists.  During prime time these channels on TV are filled with reality shows and other nonsense that aren’t directly related to music or music making.  Turn on the TV at 3 in the morning and you’ll likely see some videos playing.  I guess the heads at MTV and other music television channels have figured out that reality television is more entertaining than actual music – but in order to be considered a music outlet, the music has to go somewhere right?  You can find it online.

Music Television’s website is beginning to be restructured to make it visitor friendly.  That means that instead of getting the same layout as you do on TV, the website can be structured around personal wants and needs.  Topspin media is seeing this through by …

What Do Your Younger Music Fans Want from You?

I take pride in knowing that it was might generation that spawned digital music listening and digital DJing.  We are the ones who took it that next step to where it is today, and while it can be seen as a step backwards by some, it has opened the door to what is possible as a DJ – which is far beyond mixing songs together and scratching records.  When my generation first began downloading mp3’s from Napster, we thought we had it made, but we didn’t realize how it would change the future of music artists.  Now, in 2013, we actually feel compelled to support our artists that we like, and even if we only download their music we find other ways to support them.

The younger generation of kids who are just now learning how to listen to music and download it for themselves, don’t really understand what the …

The 10-Year-Old Inventor

Are kids getting smarter these days?  I have heard both sides of the argument.  I have seen parents complain that the student’s lack of learning is due to the teacher’s inability to teach; and I have heard people complain that kids just aren’t as smart as they used to be, with all the distractions and extra stresses we have to deal with these days.  I disagree.  I think that in terms of science and technology, there is a lot more than can be learned by a kid on his own than any other time in history.  Designers and app developers who are trying to change the DJ industry need not look further than the internet for questions and answers.

Sure, most of the innovators out there are the age of full grown adults, but there are many kids who are learning the science behind the technology as well as the …
