It's getting harder and harder to define what the DJ does nowadays. As programs like Ableton make it harder to discern where the DJ ends and the producer begins, it gets harder to put one's finger on how the DJ is defined. The one thing that definitely defines a “good” DJ though, is a floor filled with people moving to and hanging on every beat served up out of the booth. The DJ's job isn't as simple as having two decks and hitting play. The DJ is the shaman, the therapist, the tastemaker and the aerobic instructor all at once. The DJ reads the crowd, gives them the tunes they want, pushes them to euphoria and controls the pace of the party. When a DJ is really on their game, they can even influence when clubbers go to the bar and how much they tip. With all this to worry about, there's no room for questioning your setup.
