Lighting

A key thing to remember in the world of live performance is that it isn't just how it sounds, it's how it looks. Too many venues and performers forget this one. If I had a dollar for every show I've gone to where the “lighting” consisted of a blue or red wash lazily thrown up by the sound guy while he was phoning in his take out... well, I could probably afford to go out to at least twenty more shows just like that. I'm not saying that any show with poor lighting is a bad show. I am, however, saying that in a crowded field where you're out to be remembered (as a venue, DJ or performing act,) lighting certainly matters. A little fog and some simple effect lighting can go a long way, and it doesn't have to break the bank to do it.
