Stinkin expensive compared to the others Review by Ben

My Mbox 2 was on its last legs - it's basically out of software support and I wanted to go to Windows 8 with Pro Tools 11. I figured I would stick with Avid since the Mbox 2 was so awesome for a long time. But man I'm seriously disappointed. This doesn't give me anything over the old Mbox and actually takes away features. For less money I could have bought a Focusrite 8i6 or for the same money gotten ADAT support with a Focusrite 18i6. Instead I got this. It sounds good but you're only recording a stereo pair whereas with the Focusrite, or a Presonus 44VSL or a whole bunch of other brands you're recording 4-6 channels with basically equal input quality. This is probably going to be my last Avid hardware purchase.

It'd be worth it if it came with a full version of Pro Tools like my Mbox did, but Pro Tools express is abandonware at this point, though it does give you a $100 discount to buy PT11, and it does come with a spare iLok so I can buy ZDT in case I need it. I was already on the full PT10 so it wasn't worth much to me, but I gave it to a friend with a non-Avid interface and guess what - unless you have Avid hardware it doesn't work. So you have to have TWO dongles - the interface and the iLok. Nevermind there. Don't buy this unless you're also going to go to the full Pro Tools because for $170 (accounting for the upgrade discount) it's a nice interface. For $270 it's not, and it's cheaper on Unique Squared! A definite disappointment, but it works for what it does. I never bothered with the iPad stuff because I don't do Apple, but I guess that's a neat feature if you do. (Posted on 9/16/13)
