  1. A stepping stone to Platinum Review by Yev

I never bought this bundle. I went straight to Platinum, which has all the plugins in Gold plus some additional ones. I found some of the plugins in Platinum quite essential, so you if you're considering Gold, you should know not only what you'll get, but what you'll be missing.

    What you'll get (highlights):
    * The VEQ bundle. In a word - amazing. The EQs are great, especially when you want to make something brighter or notch a frequency up. The V-Comp compressor is labeled as a buss compressor, but can work on anything that does not require a harsh digital-sounding squash. Works quite nicely on vocals, I found. It even includes a de-esser

    * S1 - great at stereo manipulation, especially at manipulating the perceived direction of a sound.

    * H-Delay. Best delay ever! Hard to describe why - you need to play with it.

    * IR-L. A basic, but quite capable convolution reverb plugin. The best feature here is that you get access to Waves' huge library of impulse responses at http://www.acoustics.net. Use it to place your sound in some of the best performance spaces in the world! For an extra $10 or so, you can get the whole library on two DVDs (recommended).

    * Renaissance EQ: A true go-to equalizer. I found its high-pass and low-pass filters particularly adept at not sounding harsh and artificial, but still getting the cutting done. REQ is still my go-to EQ for filtering when a vintage EQ doesn't do the job.

    * Renaissance Reverb: A go-to algorithmic reverb, with lots of reverb types, tweaks, and some excellent pro presets.

    * Doubler: very convenient at doing ADT with more than two voices (most doubling plugins only do two)

    * PS-22: It's amazing at making things sound wide even if they never sounded wide before. Not to be confused with countless others stereo enhancing plugins that simply add delay and/or flanging to one of the sides.

Obvously, there are many more great plugins in the bundle. The plugins above are just the ones I use most often. The more important part is what's missing. Think whether or not you'll need these plugins before deciding to go for Gold instead of Platinum:

    * Mastering-oriented plugins, including L2 and L3 ultramaximizers (Well-worn mastering limiters), linear phase multiband, and linear phase Linear Phase EQ

    * RVox and RDeEsser. RVOX is a fantastic compressor for vocals. It gets you a nice boost with a minimum of fuss. RDeEsser is simply the best de-esser I've ever used. Yeah, Gold includes a different de-esser, but I've never seen anyone use it. RDeEsser, on the other hand, has made countless appearances on Pensado's Place, Sound on Sound articles, and pretty much everywhere else.

    * RBass - A psycho-accoustic bass enhancer. Creates the perception of bass even on speakers that cannot play low frequencies.

    * RChannel - a dandy all-purpose channel strip combining the major Renaissance effects in one UI.

    * OneKnob Driver: Excellent at boosting "oomph" with one knob. Turn up a little for a little warmth, turn up a lot for crushing distortion, automate for awesome transition effects.

    * Emulations of Pultec EQP-1A and MEQ-5. EQP-1a is probably the most emulated hardware EQ and for good reason. Can't describe what makes it great - you have to hear it.

The moral: If you can afford it, go for Platinum. If not, go for this one.
